Notes

Vampirella’s Shawl of Doom
(or Rat Shawl of Unusual Size)

The Plan:

  • use both skeins, all of them
  • make huge mostly stockinette body
  • one row of eyelets with beads
  • k2p2 ruffle about 10 cm wide (estimate 105g for this)

First ball -158g.
Second ball - 158g.
(Despite bought together the first skein was more variegated than the second one. It’s not very visible, but altering skeins would have been in order.)

Cast on 51 stitches.
Make one WS row - k2 |p| k2.
RS with marker placement: k2 m1 |k7 m1 PM k m1| k7 m1 k2.
Now every WS will be: k2 |p| k2.
And every RS will be: k2 m1 |knit until marker then m1 slip marker k1 m1| knit until 2 stitched from end of row m1 k2.
(Repeats are in pipes.)
When I had 115g of yarn left I started the ruffle.
First there is a eyelet (RS) row with beads: k2 |YO, k2tog, attach bead to the already knitted k2tog| k2
One simple k2 |purl| k2 row (WS).
Ruffle setup row: k2 |kbf| k2 (RS).
Ribbed ruffle:
(WS): k2 |p3 k2| k2
(RS): k2 |k3 p2| k2
Bind off.

This thing is getting huge. I am a bit afraid it won’t fit on my circular needle… Do I buy 150 cm one?
I did get that needle, otherwise I couldn’t accommodate all the stitches especially when the ruffle doubled the count.

Maybe the ruffle should have started at 50% of yarn left.
Then it would have been longer. Now it is only about 6 cm wide.

14 rows of the ruffle. 16g left.
I am making the crochet bind off right now, started with 16 g of yarn left. I hope for few extra meters to make crochet border on the part where the shawls started it doesn’t look very good.

At the end 1.3g left, that was rather close :)

Blocking. I haven’t pulled much because it already has a very nice drape (due to weight maybe), but I hope the stitches will even out a bit.

Colour on the top photos is not very accurate. Weird sunlight…
