I got asked if I could make a giraffe head. Always up for a challenge I am using Vanessa Mooncie’s fantastic patterns to help make it. I decided to use the stag head pattern up to row 40 then went right in to the zebra pattern starting at round 23 am continuing on. Not worrying about stripes obviously I am using the two colors stranded to get fairly random spots. Oh also before starting to turn the neck I turned him upside down. So the shaping that forms the strips on the zebra face are reversed top and bottom. I just liked how it looked a bit better for my particular piece since I don’t have to worry about stripe continuity.

For the horned. Magic circle 6SC (DC for UK terms) into ring. 2 sc (DC if UK) into each 6 sts (12 sts). 1 SC, 2 SC inc in next stitch repeat around (18sts). Sc in each around (18 sts). Sc 1 DC next 2 sts repeat around (12 sts). SC around 10 rounds (120 sts total (12 each round)).
Using darker yarn cut 5” pieces. You want around 50 per horn. Fewer for a thinner puff more for thicker. Fold 1 piece in half, insert hook behind a stitch and grab the middle of the folded strand. Pull middle through with hook. Slip ends of strand through the loop you pulled behind the stitch then pull tight. Repeat around the top of the horn until desired thickness (it will thin as you comb but also fluff a bit. You can do sections to find what you prefer).
Then carefully and slowly at first work comb through strands starting at the ends. A lot of fuzz will come out but the strands will also fluff as you comb. Continue until thickness and texture you want then trim to preferred size.
