My mom has a slouchy knit beanie in grey acrylic that she loves wearing when she takes the dog for a walk in the winter. It got a hole in it, which I repaired, but I feared for its longevity with so much wear. So I made her a replica in a nice warm wool and another neutral color so that she could switch things up.
The original hat measured flat and unstretched was 9” at the band, 10.75” at the widest point of the body, and 11” tall. The pattern repeat height was 3”.
My final hat came out slightly taller than this, but as it’s a slouchy beanie, this wasn’t a problem.
Recipe is as follows:
Cast On
Cast on 100 stitches using a US 8 straight needle and the long tail tubular cast on. (I followed the written instructions from Purl Soho.) Join for working in the round.
Band
Switch to US 6 and knit 1x1 ribbing for 1”. On last round, slip every knit stitch to improve the transition to stockinette.
Body
Switch to US 8.
