Other than going up a needle size for both the ribbing and the body of the pattern, I made no changes. I used the long-tail cast on and the 3-in-1 TECHjoin; my ribbing is 16 rounds deep. I used magic loop to finish the crown.
I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to catchat105, who illuminated the one patch of murkiness in the pattern. The Decrease 5 to 1 instructions should read as follows: Slip the next two stitches knitwise, removing the marker if necessary. * Lift the second stitch on the left-hand needle over the first stitch and off. Slip the first stitch on the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle (purlwise). Slip the second stitch on the right-hand needle over the first stitch and off. Slip the first stitch on the right-hand needle to the left-hand needle (purlwise). Repeat from * once more. Slip the first stitch on the right-hand needle back to the left-hand needle (purlwise), replace the marker if necessary, and purl the stitch.
When I looked for the Decrease 5 on YouTube, I found multiple videos that demonstrate the instructions in reverse. That is, slipping three stitches to the right needle, and the first “pass stitch over” action happening on the right needle instead of the left. So far as I can tell, the result is the same, but watching the videos confused me until I worked it successfully myself.
Other than this initial hiccup, the knitting went quickly and smoothly.
