I feel as though I’ll never have enough scarves, so I started this one even though the weather was already turning toward spring and I knew I probably wouldn’t get to wear it much this season. I cast on during a road trip to IKEA, and despite having to rip back a couple of times due to minor errors, it came together very quickly.
Things I Did
I cast on the recommended 32 stitches and did a total of 24 pattern repeats. I’m a tight knitter, so my finished piece was a little shorter and a lot narrower than the pattern, even after blocking.
Things I Would Do Differently
The soft and drapey nature of this wool/silk blend combined with how long and narrow the scarf is means it doesn’t really work wrapped twice around my neck. Wrapped once or left unwrapped, it’s a bit on the longish side--I’m petite--so I would make it shorter and wider if I were to do it again in a similar yarn. In a thicker or more structured yarn, the length would be fine, but I would probably still make it wider to compensate for my insanely tight gauge.
Finished Measurements
Length: 68 inches
Width: 3.5 inches
Technical Details
I used a ChiaoGoo RED Lace circular needle (24”). I wet blocked the finished piece using pins rather than blocking wires, which I haven’t had much luck with in the past. To avoid rippling or peaks along the edges, I put the pins inside the garter edging rather than along the outer edge and smoothed the garter stitch as I went.
Update
I frogged this scarf on 3/2/2014. I love pattern and I love the yarn, but I found I didn’t love them together and I never wore the finished result. I reclaimed the yarn and intend to use it in a pattern that actually benefits from its softness and drape; I hope to knit this pattern again in a more suitable yarn down the road.
