Because I needed two skeins of the Freia Handpaints to complete the size small, I had to alternate skeins to produce a continuous light-to-dark gradient. Since the right side (RS) rows begin with a slipped stitch to create a tidy edge along the top of the shawl, it was necessary to alternate skeins at the end of each RS row instead of the beginning like I normally would. This doesn’t affect the knitting at all, it’s just a change in perspective—I caught myself many times thinking of the back of the work as the front, because I’ve trained myself to think of switching yarns as a signal that I’m starting a public-facing row.
I enjoyed knitting all of the different eyelet/lace designs, and the sampler-like nature of the pattern engaged my “just one more row” impulse, making the knitting itself fly by in the most satisfying way.
Things I Did
- Cast on: Knit cast on
- Bind off: Picot bind off (as instructed)
- Alternated skeins at the end of each right side row/beginning of each wrong side row, which forms the lower edge of the shawl
