This is the first thing I ever cast on with no pattern at all. George Crabtree has worn it in a lot of episodes of Murdoch Mysteries, season 15. I never get tired of seeing it onscreen.

Joanna the costume designer told me what she wanted, and I tried a few things until I came up with this:
Cast on 28 stitches, and knit 20 rows garter stitch (10 ridges) in light grey.

* Stripe pattern: 6 rows (3 ridges) of white
2 rows (1 ridge) of black
4 rows (2 ridges) of red
2 rows (1 ridge) of black
6 rows (3 ridges) of white
12 rows (6 ridges) of light grey *

Repeat between * and * until your scarf is as long as you want it to be. (I kept going until Joanna said stop.) Knit 8 rows (4 ridges) of light grey and bind off. Weave in the many ends.

Topsy Farms only seldom has the Ruby colourway, but their red is also very nice. Also, they are wonderful people who make beautiful sheepy yarn.
