Notes

I wanted to make a shawlette and tried out the c2c linen stich. However, from past experience, I found that the 3 long tips of a triangular shawl were bothersome for someone that is sitting all day long on a wheelchair. It is especially so for the tip at the back. So, I cut back the 3 angle tips, and the result was this geometric shape cape (see last image).

After completing the cape, I tried it on. It fit well, and it’s comfortable for all day wearing. The shoulder length is not so long that would be in the way when washing hands or do home chores.

This is the general pattern for small/medium adult size:
Begin the Linen Stitch pattern with ch 52 (or multiple of 2 + 2 more ch).
Row 1: Sc into 4th st from hook, *ch 1, sk 1 st, sc into the nex st, repeat from * across the row, in the last at: [sc, ch 1, sc (this is an increase)]. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: *Sc into ch-1 loop, ch 1, repeat from * across the row, in the last 2-ch loop: [sc, ch 1, sc]. Ch 2, turn.

  • Repeat row 2 and continue the Linen Stitch with increases at the end of each row until you reach to row 34 (approximately 22 cm/8.6” in length and 116 sts across).
  • Then, continue on without increasing at the end of each row for another 42 rows (approximately 27.5 cm/10.8”) or until the yarn is about to run out to complete the last row. Fasten off but do not cut off the yarn. Use remaining yarn to make button loops.

If you’d like to make the front longer, at the same vertical length as the back:

  • Add 18 more rows of increase at the end of each row (total of 52 rows).
  • Then, continue on for another 27 rows without increasing at the end of each row.
  • For this version of the Geometric Cape, you would need 1 more skein of yarn.
  • Basically, you can add rows of increases and non-increases to size the cape as wide or as long as you desire. The dimensions do not need to be exact as this cape is very forgiving.

Note: I wrote some tips for working with the Linen Stitch here if you’d like to use them.

Making Button Loops:

  • Use hook size 4.0 mm to make the loops. Then, change back to hook size 5.5 mm for the sl st.

  • The buttons I used were approximately 2.5 cm (1”) in diameter.

  • sl st to 2nd sc, *ch 4 snuggly (or how many ch you’d need to fit on the chosen button), skip nex sc, sl st into the next 4 sc. Repeat from * 2 times making a total of 3 loops. Fasten off.

  • Sew 3 buttons on the same edge but at the other end (see last 2 chart images). Sew the buttons at the same distance corresponding to the button loops.
