To start I chained (14 x 14) + 3 = 196 + 3 = 199 chain using a 5mm crochet hook. I.e., 14 repeats of the pattern. I crocheted 1 row (across and back) of each colour.
Finished Size of the blanket is 134cm x 116cm,
or 52¾” x 45¾”.
The blanket is pictured on a King Size Single bed.(wider and longer than normal)
Weight of blanket = 1180 grams
Weight of remnant wool = 105 grams collectively, which means that you get slightly more than 200grams on each ball apart from the ‘Wild Barley’ which had the least ‘extra’ yarn.
Purchased all the wool from Bendigo Woollen Mills during their pre-Christmas wool sale for $11 per ball and also received FREE shipping. Total cost of wool = $77. :-D
I have since deleted ‘Aquarium’. Cost of blanket is now $66. Total weight of wool 6 x 200 grams = 1.2kg.
I have done two test swatches, 4 & 5mm. I like the 5mm swatch – it is softer, looser, floppier and easier to crochet.
I found the advice to “ALWAYS go up a size when crocheting” from the recommended size for the yarn to be true.
A 5mm hook allows the natural ‘bounce’ of the yarn to show and the swatch was soft and supple (in 4mm it was hard and stiff). The lacy ‘holes’ created will trap warm air and allow ‘breathing’.

UPDATE: 25.10.2014
I’ve found that the different colours of the Luxury yarn are slightly varying thickness with the white being the thinnest - also even though all the balls are supposed to be 200grams the “Wild Barley” is almost all used up while there’s still about 50grams left of all the other colours, which won’t be wasted. (See the 4th photo)
I’ll be purchasing some more Luxury yarn from BWM to add an edging border.
The edging I will be using for the project can be found on Lucy’s Attic24 blog in the post from Dec 30, 2012 called Interlocking Colour Ripple::Ta-dah!
