Notes

Pattern for Twisted Cowl in Noro:-

Using a scrap of yarn and invisible cast on, cast on a 7 stitch stocking stitch border either side of 6 x (7 stitch pattern) repeats of the ‘gull stitch’ pattern, by Elizabeth Zimmermann, which can be found in her book “Knitters Almanac” in the babywear section. This is the same stitch which is found in the “February Jacket”.

I put stitch markers after each repeat of the pattern while knitting to help to notice and prevent any pattern mistakes, which has been helpful quite a few times. You notice straight away when you have the wrong number of stitches.

Gull Pattern:
7 stitches wide; 4 rows high:
Row 1. (Wrong side) and all other wrong-side rows – Purl
Row 2. K 1, k 2 tog, YO, K 1, YO ssk, k1. Repeat across.
Row 4. K 2 tog, YO, k 3, YO, ssk. Repeat across. Repeat from row 1.

I had meant to make the borders in garter stitch, but knit stocking stitch instead. This created a neat edge which rolls up on each side which means you only ever really see the ‘right’ side of the gull stitch pattern which is good.

I cast on with a ball of Noro ‘Silk Garden Lite’ which was in my stash, then used Noro ‘Silk Garden’ which is somewhat heavier, also in my stash. I would have used 2 balls of the ‘Lite’ if I had had them, as I prefer the lighter texture. I also switched to a 5mm needle when using the heavier yarn, but it’s hardly noticable on the finished article.

I put a double twist in the cowl before joining the ends, so that I was joining right sides together.

I’m very happy with this cowl, it’s very comfortable and easy to wear.
