I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Britta Schonfeldt’s Muscari Socks/Chart. Used the beautiful chart and made a DK weight hat by holding 2 strands of fingering weight yarn together.
Started 2x2 ribbing with 120 sts, German twisted CO, and US 4 needles. Held chickory and delta together Tried this video tip to improve my join in the round; I liked the result. This was too tight, so I started over with 132 sts, German twisted CO, and US 5 needles. This fit great.
Worked 4” of 2x2 ribbing with chickory and delta yarns held double, US 5 needles and combination knitting. Then worked 1 round of stockinette.
Switched to US 6 needles and began chart upside down. All yarn was held double. After re-numbering the rows on the upside down chart, I worked rows 1-10 then worked 21-45.
Muscari flowers:
- 1st round: Changed to all knit stitches. (I tried the k/p combo as charted, but it brought up white purl bumps.)
- 2nd round: Switched to US 5 needles. (At this point the hat measured 7.75” from edge; I realized I was near the start point of crown shaping. Sometimes I can get more design features in by decreasing the needle size throughout the crown.)
- Switched to US 4 needles when flower heads became 3 sts wide.
Crown:
- Knit 2 rounds of background color. Switched to US 3 needles at the beginning of the 2nd round.
- Worked a pinwheel pattern (to represent the sun) loosely based on the Sock Monkey Beanie. My main deviation from this pattern was working k3tog instead of k2tog decreases.
I must have recorded incorrect yarn weights in the past. The yarns I held double in different colors do not match in their weights used for this project.
The muscari tips get lost in the folds of the rapid crown decreases, but I vow to try again. This muscari chart is so lovely.
