Thanks to Jennifer Miller of Theodora’s Pearls for this pattern inspiration! I enjoyed making a crescent shawl with a knitted on border - a great intro to knitted on borders if you’ve never done one before.
This pattern was relatively easy for an experienced knitter and I found I could zone out easily since even the lace portion had a very predictable rhythm. I’m really glad I went for a larger size (see the pic of my Levity on our 60” big screen. It’s so large, it hangs a good couple of feet off each side. For us taller girls, that’s a great thing.
I’ve worked two large projects in Auxanometer now and am loving it. We are warm most of the year but we still like scarves and wraps; bamboo is perfect for us.
When working in multiple colors, I typically throw a Shout Color Catcher in the water when blocking. This helps keep any excess dye from running into other colors. I had a little bit of pink in the water, nothing dramatic, but better safe than sorry.

I used nearly a full (all but a yard or so) of the Peche Melba (brighter pink) and think I’ll need 2 of the Pomegranate (bright red) to do a 288-stitch shawl. (The designer gives you the option for how wide to make the garter-stitch crescent; the more stitches, the more yarn you need for the lace portion.)

I ended up with 288 st in the garter section and this required 24 of the sawtooths for the edging. As expected, I needed more than 1 skein of the Pomegranate; I used nearly 1/2 of the second skein.
Do you get asked, “How long will it take you to finish?” Same here, that seems to be a top 5 question. It’s rare that I work on only one project at a time so the answer is often hard to describe. In this case, I started Levity in May but worked on several other projects in between. However, once I started the sawtooths, I worked on little else. And I happened to be on a major road trip so it’s easy to calculate hours - 17 hours (I wasn’t driving, honest) while on the road and then a few nights worth when we got home. All in, the sawtooth lace took about 30 hours.
Tricks needed:
- Working in bamboo is a little slippery. Newer knitters will want to stay on wood needles for better traction and fewer run-a-way stitches. I also recommend point protectors.
- KFB - knit front and back increases
- Knitted on border (lace section), using either a loose bind off edge or live stitches.
- lace in the form of yo/k2tog and yo/p2tog.
