Both the yarn and pattern were gifted to me as an “Additional Award Courtesy of Yarns International” at the Maryland State Fair in 2012. Many thanks!
2012 ~ Lots of acquaintances needed (wanted ;>) elaborate and massive knitted lace shawls completed for weddings, ballroom dances, etc., therefore the Feather Lace Shawl is not a feasible priority at this time. Owing to the extent of this year’s workload, probably early next year will mark the completion of the FLS.
2013 ~ Unfortunately, late August has rolled around and am just now starting this project during the fair-to-fair time -- had so many knitting commissions up until this point.
The hand-dyed 100% merino wool yarn is a lovely pale-to-light-medium blue with subtle variegation and is very soft. The texture is perfectly smooth, even, and knitting with it is a pleasure. Only four of the six skeins were needed to complete the third repeat of chart 2. The sl2, k1, psso rib for the feathers is a nice touch, lending the illusion of a string and clean linear ridge; a rarely seen variation of the usual s1, k2tog, psso found in many lace motifs.
I blocked the finished project to greater finished dimensions than called for since it is an ingrained habit to create an airy hand. 50 x 95 rather than 40 x 78 inches. No undue tension from the pins, just enough to pull out the design as influenced by the damp fiber. Each picot point was pinned for emphasis. 350 Crystal Czech 6/0 beads were added to the lower edge as instructed in the pattern.
This is a beautiful and elegant design with many subtle features that make it an instant classic and treasured complement to my wardrobe. The variegation is reminiscent of sunlight in clear water… I love it.
Thank you Yarns International!
