An almost 3yr old I always watch at church asked me before Christmas to knit her a hat because she “didn’t have one, her head is cold.”
I tried several times to do the I Heart Cables hat pattern because I loved the look of it, but for some reason just could not figure it out/get it to work.
I decided to use, what is slowly becoming my “old stand-by” hat pattern: Brambles Beret.
Mods for the hat:
Cast on 88 sts. 1x1 rib for 10 rows.
Set up row: k1, kk to last 3 ss then kk, kk, kk (increases 45 sts across row for a total of 133 sts.)
Began body chart at 9 row, knit through row 29. Then I knit rows 14-20 again before beginning crown chart at row 1. This gave me a little extra length, but not a ton. I want it to be a little slouchy but not HUGE as it is for a preschooler.
Mitts:
CO 34 sts. 1x1 rib for 4 rows. From there I began a smaller version of the brambles pattern on the front, while maintaining the 1x1 rib on the back for 10 more rows (14 total).
Across the front of the mitt:
1) p1, k2, p1, k9, p1, k2, p1
2) p1, cable, p1, cable 2 over 2, k1, cable 2 over 2, p1, cable, p1
3) p1, k2, p1, k9, p1, k2, p1
4) p1, cable, p1, k9, p1, cable, p1
5) p1, k2, p1, k9, p1, k2, p1
6) p1, cable, p1, k9, p1, cable, p1
7) p1, k2, p1, k9, p1, k2, p1
8) p1, cable, p1, cable 2 over 2, k1, cable 2 over 2, p1, cable, p1
9) p1, k2, p1, k2, p1,k1 2x, p1, k2, p1, k2, p1
10) p1, cable, p1, k2, k1,p1 2x, k1, k2, p1, cable, p1
11) p1, k2, p1, k2, p1,k1 2x, p1, k2, p1, k2, p1
12) p1, cable, p1, k2, k1,p1 2x, k1, k2, p1, cable, p1
13) p1, k2, p1, k2, p1,k1 2x, p1, k2, p1, k2, p1
Repeat rows 2-13 2 more times, then work flat for 4 rows to make the thumb hole. Join back in the round and work 1 more time.
(On the back, 14 rows of 1x1 rib, then 19 rows stockinette, then 8 more rows of 1x1 rib.)
BO in 1x1 rib across the back, and as follows the pattern across the front.
