So that sounds easy enough and maybe with cakes (so you can reach both ends) this is easier, but this always seems super daunting to me, assuming you want to exhaust the yarns. If it’s a stash buster instead of a scraps project then that’s pretty easy as well. Anyway what I did:

For the 14 yarns that aren’t Shipwreck at Midnight or Unicorn Tails, I wound off a little ball of 13 yards (about the same as 25% of a unicorn tail) by putting a piece of tape on my desk and pulling yarn off the ball 26 times. This is what I used when that color was held double, until it was gone.

For the Unicorn Tails, I unwound 25% by weight (because nearly all of them were under sized) and cut there (again to use when that color was held double until it was used up). Then I unwound another 25% and tied an overhand knot to tell me when to stop the non-Unicorn Tail yarn in the 3 different color sections. After making the knot I rewound that yarn so I had a 75% ball with a knot and a 25% ball.

This actually was super quick to work, definitely spent more time dealing with the yarn than crocheting.
