Pre-casting on thoughts: Really wanna bust some stash for this project, so I chose what I hope best suits. Definitely planning on seed stitch instead of star, because a) I don’t want to have to pay that much attention and b) I can more easily repair seed stitch should a snag or bug cause an injury to one of those sections. Planning also on picking up and doing a narrow band across the top when all is finished, like so many others have helpfully demonstrated.
Mods:
- Slip stitch edging across top edge of upper shawl body, aka 1st stitch of RS rows (so I can more easily pick up stitches later)
- Seed stitch instead of star stitch

Picking up sts for lower half tonight!
Quartered w stitch markers, pick up 39, then 40, then 39, then 40 (m), then 39, then 40, then 40, then 39. (317 sts)

Finished Mosaic Chart 3, somehow have 337 sts. Oh well.

Been sleeping on this. Trying to crank it out now that it’s almost summer! Oops. Almost to the big mosaic band in the lower shawl body and I somehow have 399 instead of 389… hmm…
I tried plowing forward but no good. Ripped back, got my correct stitch count, then began the band again. This time good!

This uses way less yarn than called for, imo. But I guess I haven’t done the tassles yet, so we shall see!

My god, that was a loooong break. I ran out of white yarn, it took me forever to get another skein, but maybe I can still finish by the end of the year!

Finished. Whew! Here are my thoughts:
-
you can absolutely substitute seed stitch with no need to do the additional +/- stitch count to make up for gauge difference as mentioned in the pattern. I just ignored that part, did seed stitch wherever the other fancier one was called for, zero problems.

I really like my 2-stitch knitted on i-cord bind off, so much so that I did it across the top of the shawl as well. I thought I was going to add another strip of the small mosaic chart like so many other folks did, but in the end, I really liked the i-cord look better. 3 stitched was too chunky, so I did 2.
-
This truly felt like it took forever, and I think it was the loooong rows. I don’t know if I would knit it again.
-
I honestly thought it would come out a bit bigger! Could do it in a sport weight and would like it just as much.
-
I should not have slipped the first stitch of every row. While that does make a more beautiful finished edge, it complicated picking up stitches along the top edge for my i-cord bind off, so if you’re thinking of doing the same, skip it. Leave the regular bumpy garter edge, you won’t see it once you pick up & knit on a border or other added edge element.
