Changed to a slightly darker colour of oatmeal for the cast-off cuff row, and a second body colour for the lower skirt, after running out of the scraps I was using - this takes quite a bit more than the doll-sized patterns do!
The usual confusion over casting off in the middle of the row. You knit 38 more stitches after the one that follows the casting-off, and the first two stitches you knit while casting off only count as one…

I unravelled back to add an extra oatmeal row after the castoff (which unfortunately meant I had to splice in a new length of wool) in order to ensure the colour change falls on the knit side instead of leaving an odd row of purl bumps…

I ended up knitting 38 rows on the lower half in order to reach a length of about 8 inches; the garment is supposed to be 9 inches overall. Obviously my vertical tension is very much too small! I hope the bodice is a short enough section for the difference over the shaped portion not to make too much difference.

I’ve just realised… I forgot to make the third buttonhole back at armhole level….
Ended up by snipping a stitch and using the starting end of wool from the first row of the oatmeal stripe to fasten down the loose ends and create an afterthought buttonhole. It’s slightly larger and a little stiffer than the other two, but probably not detectable, given that there are three other ends also woven into that striped area.
Just as well I hadn’t done any of the sewing-in yet!

Little (vintage) brown textured buttons finally sewn on.
