Recreating a colorwork sweater I found on the web.

2022-06-09

Gauge from stockings I knit for Harlen and Briggs.

Cast on 296 st

2022-06-20

Need a multiple of 16 for the bottom pattern, so have cast on 288 stitches at the hip hem using tubular cast on.

Knit 1x1 rib for 2”.

Start Wrist Hem Neckline chart.

Tentative plan is to increase 8 st over the course of the body before reaching the Yoke + Sleeve top chart.

Will also go with more traditional “lice” instead of the double lice.

2022-06-29

Need a total length of 27”. That is 216 rows.

Top is 89 rows.
Ribbing is 21 rows.
Bottom hem is 25 rows.

This leaves 81 rows of lice. That is 27 repeats of lice. Will actually be 26.666 repeats.

Finished knitting the body!

In general, use size 3 for ribbing and lice. Size 4 for the colorwork.

I ended up knitting 15.5” before starting the pattern for the top. Unfortunately I wasn’t home, so I couldn’t block it to check how much it would stretch out before starting the top colorwork. Based on the swatch and the total number of rows I should get to the right length after blocking. But we all know swatches lie, so I added a few (4) additional rows to the yoke colorwork.
Total pre-blocking length is 28”.

Time to start the sleeves! Off to do calculations.

Cast on 64 st. K1p1 ribbing for 2”. Knit 1 repeat of wrist chart (4 repeats around). Should be 5” long by then.
Increase 1 stitch in the solid color row between the cuff chart and the lice pattern (65 st).

For the next part (lice and colorwork), increase 2 st every 4th row at the underarm until there are a total of 129 st. Then knit evenly.

Knit lice pattern until sleeve measures 9.55”. Then knit colorwork pattern (with additional rows as on body). Incorporate new stitches into pattern. Total sleeve length should be 21.8”.

Reverse direction and knit 3/4” in MC, increasing 2st every other row for the facing. This bit of fabric will cover the raw steeked edges when finishing the sweater.

I’ve been spending the last few weeks finishing the sweater. What a lot of finishing!

First I grafted the shoulders shut.
Then I needle felted everywhere I needed to cut: The armholes, the neckline in front and back.
Then I sewed reinforcements and cut.
Picked up the neckband and knit it. Folded it over and bound off by grafting to the picked up stitches.
Picked up the edging along the collar, knit, folded, grafted down.
Grafted the sleeves to the armholes.

Next:
Sew armhole seam linings.
Sew in zipper.
Reinforce bottom of zipper.
Weave in ends.
Block.
Wear.
