On long car journeys I sometimes listen to things I have forgotten I once liked, such as Donovan’s Gift from a Flower to a Garden, which my big sister had when I was about the age when I first tried to knit; as dungarees are kind of garden-wear, and these ones are particularly folky-earth-motherish, I am christening them thus in homage to Mr Leitch. (Fred being my flower in this case)

I am excited to be casting on these Go-veralls. I love the pattern because I love a dungaree and I have had it queued for a while. I have a photo of Kate in some brown polyester ‘denim’ dungarees when she was a smallster of about 14 months, (and before she was old enough to object to my choice in clothes. Which happened at about two and a half. No more trousers until she was six and could be persuaded a turquoise jumpsuit was a good choice. What was I thinking?)

I hope she and Fred will like these. Not sure what size to make really - it’s warm here just now, and Fred is, erm, well, tall for his age… Casting on 6-12 months but my gauge is a wee bit out which I think will mean they come up a bit bigger…which should be ok as other Ravelers have said they are sometimes on the small side???

Mmmm I am up to knitting the rise and these look super wide, a bit like Loon Pants (you might just recall these if you are as old as me!) I am not convinced I am going to have enough yarn, so trying to decide whether to order more or try to complete with some stash yarn. I could just tolerate a strap in a different colour, but my attraction to these was their simplicity, so I really don’t want to start on stripes. Besides which, I don’t think my daughter will want to fully re-live the fashion sensibilities of the 1970s through Fred…enough is enough!

Finished knitting. Now blocking. They look massive. Because I was worried about not having enough yarn, I didn’t follow suggestion for adding some short rows to the rise, but I wish I had. I’ve got yarn left and despite general overall hugeness, I am wondering if they will fit a tall and chunky baby’s nappy clad bottom…Seeing Fred on Thursday, so may see if I can sneak a little try-on.

Success of sorts…Fred wore these today on our day out. (Yes, August. It isn’t exactly cold, but not exactly hot either.)

The legs needed turning up, and there is room to grow width wise, but the rise was just about the right…I cast off after the leg increases, so yes, if you make these, do think about adding some extra rows to the rise.

I did a quick fix at the crotch (had ten minutes to finish these before we headed out) by sewing some chain stitch rows across the diamond shaped gap…with more time I could have done a better job, and I may try this trick again if I make another pair. Cute overall…(pun, pun)
