Dense fabric for mitts and socks recommend going down 1-2 sizes from label suggestion for sweater drape. So I’ll try US 4 for body of mitt and add 4 more sts to mitt body = 52 total sts.

Striped Ribbed Cuff
Using smaller size needle (US 2.5), Cast on 48 stitches in MC using Old Norwegian CO.
K2 P2 for 20-25 rounds in whatever pattern you like (Shown: 10 MC, 2 CC, 3 MC, 3 CC, 3 MC, 2CC, 6 MC — first row of color change knit in stockinette instead of rib for cleaner transition)

After cuff, switch to larger size needles (US 4)
K one round in MC while Iincreasing 4 sts w M1L evenly spaced for total stitch count 52.
Incorporate these extra 4 sts in chart design by adding 1 extra MC sts before and after the 3-stitch side column.

K two rounds of 1x1 checker pattern.
K one round in MC
Start chart pattern.

Thumb Gusset*
Make increases for the thumb as shown to form the thumb gusset. Increase to 11 sts and set aside 11 sts top and bottom for thumb by knitting 11 sts with scrap yarn.

Thumb
When ready for thumb, pick up the 11 sts plus three sts at each side so there’s 28 sts total for thumb circumference. The three extra sts at each side are CC, MC, CC. The thumb decreases will be in CC. In photos, the CC is off white color.

My son order the same alpaca blend yarn and asked me to knit these mittens for his to gift to his dear female friend for their first Christmas to keep her hands protected and warm. She is a pianist and a voice major in college. They live several states apart but practiced individually a French Duet on the piano to perform together when they met up over their Fall Break.
Hers will be worked on US2&3, CO 48 sts and increase to 52 sts after the cuff. Hers will have the inverse colors using Snowbank as the background color and the teal as the contrast color.
