My son order the same alpaca blend yarn and asked me to knit these mittens for a friend to keep her hands protected and warm. She is a pianist and a voice major in college. They attend schools several states apart but practiced their parts on this duet individually to perform together when they met up over their Fall Break.

CO 52 sts with the smaller needles (Old Norwegian CO).
Used 9” circular in US2.
Join in round.
Double rib total of w29 rounds:
MC 10 rnds, CC 2 rnds , MC 3 rnds, CC 3 rnds, MC 3 rnds, CC 2 rnds, MC 6rnds. Knit the first rnd with new color before working in double rib to avoid purl blips of previous color.

Gauge in Ribbing (US2): 16 sts & 19 rnds in 2”
Gauge in Stranded (US3): 14 sts & 16 rnds in 2”

Switch to larger needles, K1 rnd, checker board 2 rnds, start chart.
Used 6” cable +3” tip+2” tip in size US3.
Used DPN for decreases at the top of mitten.

As I’ve seen recommended in Norwegian knitting books, Place BOR opposite the thumb so transition isn’t as noticeable.

Increases for a Side-thumb Gusset lean direction of growing fabric so M1L at right side of thumb and M1R at left side; whereas increases for a Selbu-thumb Gusset: M1R on right side and M1L on left side.

Increases on stranded work: p/u strand in same color of stitch you’re making. (60sts)

Held thumb gusset sts by knitting in scrap #3 Crochet Thread.

Pull threaded tapestry needle to cinch top when there are three white sts between the side borders.

Mitten Body Width 4 1/8”
Mitten Body length from cuff to tip: 7 1/4”
Cuff width: 3”
Cuff length 3 1/8”
Thumb opening: 1 7/8” from cuff
Thumb opening to tip: 5 1/4”

Wt Snowshoe #1: 30g-8g= 22g used before thumbs
Wt Jaquard 20g-5g= 15g used before thumbs
Wt Snowshoe #2: 9g
Wt Snowshoe #3: 52g- 23g rem= 29 g used for 2nd mitten and second thumb.
Wt jacquard: 51- 32g rem= 19 g used for 2nd mitten and 2nd thumb.
