These cabled mitts will be a gift to a wonderful lady in Wisconsin who has been Facebook friends with me during my knitting journey. Her husband is from Norway and she has shared her experiences in visiting friends and family from there.
Pattern gauge: 27 sts and 40 rows in 4”x4”(pat states that this gauge was taken on unblocked swatch!)
Suggested Needle Size: US3
Yardage 190(220)
Sizes: 6”(7”), to fit hand circumference up to 7.5”(8.5”)
Recipient’s hand circumference is 6.75”
I plan to use 10% negative ease:
6.75” x 0.90 = 6.075” as target mitt circumference.
Suggested wool: Corriedale, Targhee, Cormo, Rambouillet, or any soft, smooth, springy yarn.
Winding up some New Zealend Corriedale Wool blended with Merino using a nostepinne my oldest son in college made me in curly maple. This small handy nostepinne even held a double skein (200g) of heavy Aran weight for an Irish sweater I finished just before this project.
US2.0 20.5 sts per 3” and 19 rows per 2”
US2.5 20sts per 3” and 18 rows per 2”
US3.0. 19sts per 3” and 16 rows per 2”
Pattern gauge: 20.25 sts per 3” and 20 rows per 2”
Pattern gave gauge in unblocked Stst swatch.
Will use US 2 for the mitts.
The larger thumb gusset of 32 rows results in 3.25” length.
The shorter thumb gusset of 24 rows results in 2.25” length.
Modifications:
- Use the stitch count for large circumferences on hand (60 sts) and thumb (20 sts).
- Start thumb gusset for the shorter gusset but increase every 3 rows to get the larger circumference.
- Used 12 rows of ribbing at cuff and 10 rows of ribbing for the top band at fingers and thumb.
Cuff: Use smaller needle for Italian Tubular CO
CO 60 sts w US0 and set up for (k1, p2, k1) double rib.
Switch to larger US3 and work 12 rows of double rib.
Photo of Italian Tubular Co and the 12 rows of the cuff.
Start 28 st cable chart for mitt back.
Gusset: After R40 of Chart, place markers on either side of the two knit stitches that are 7 sts from end of round for Left Mitt and for the Right Mitt the pair of markers are 7 sts from the 28-st Cable section
Gusset Increases:
R1: Incr inside of markers and work St st between markers. R2-3work even following pat until you have 18 sts between the markers and completed R20 on chart.
Work next round in Pat, remove marker, place 18 thumb sts on scrape yarn, remove marker, cast on 2 sts, work to end of round.
Continue working in pat ending on Row 37 of Chart.
Work 10 rows of double rib, rearranging into 1x1 on the 10th Row to prepare for tubular bind off.
Bindoff: switch to smaller needle (US0) and Work two passes of double knit, starting with working knit sts and slipping purl sts.
Kitchener graft.
Thumb: Place 1st and last held stitch on same needle and pick up 2 more sts from gap between 1st and last st so have total of 20 sts. (Originally Work P2, k2 for 10 rows and tubular bind off: rearrange sts to 1x1, work two passes starting with k1, yf slip1 to end ; then yb slip 1, p1 to end. Kitchener.) Didn’t like the slant of sts from changing the double rib to single rib on the shorter length of ribbing on the thumb so reworked the thumb.
After picking up thumb stitches and minimizing gaps by picking up half stitch on either side of running strand and knitting them together to end up with 20 sts. Then work 11 rounds of double rib and bind off in pattern.
Tubular CastOn in the round for 2x2 Ribbing
Provisional Crochet CO half sts
Work 4 rows St st, starting with a knit row.
Pick up right leg of provisional sts and remove the holding yarn. K2, p2 across and join in round.

Arenda Holladay also has an article on this same type of tubular cast on. Since there is no double knitting with slip stitches you can cast on with same needle size your using for the project. With the other Tubular CastOn below, you need to go down 1 or 2 needle sizes so edge is not loose looking.
Italian Tubular CastOn in the round for 2x2 Ribbing
Using smaller needles, CastOn Alternating between purl and knit, starting with purl. Tail over thumb. Twist purl by twisting tip away.
Cast on knit by picking up working yarn over finger
Cast on purl by going back then under both strands and carry thumb yarn under finger yarn.Work to end.
Hold tail along tip such that working yarn is caught.
1st Double Knitting Pass: catch w tip or bring yarn in front, slip purl st, k1; rep from to end twisting last k st.
After 1st Pass, connect in round and p1, slip k; rep from to end. Tighten yarn tail.
After 2nd Pass, switch to larger needle (1-2 sizes up) and since last stitch before BOR was a knit stitch, switch orientation of next two stitches so the new st after BOR is a knit st. Switch orientation by inserting RTip knitwise through the 2nd st (k) and 1st st (p) together. Then transfer the reoriented purl st kw buck to Ltip and finish knitting the knit st. Continue 2x2 Ribbing Pattern.

Weave tail to make jogless join:
Mark BOR by placing marker in fabric between the two knit sts that straddle the BOR. Thread tail through tapestry needle, pass through half stitch of the knit that is to the right of the yarn tail from back to front.
Turn to non public side and pass tapestry through half v legs on backside on either side of the purl looking stitches that sandwich the BOR. pull yarn through and weave in end.

“Thumb circumference is 10% of total palm circumference.”
Roxanne and Suzanne likes gusset increases to lean toward the section that is changing shape. Therefore, m1L after 1st thumb marker, knit across thumb, and m1R before 2nd thumb marker.
Suzanne Bryan recommends 10% negative ease. With #2-#3 weight yarn.
Pick up half stitch on either side of running strand and then decrease to total stitch count you started with.
