Worked on my Singer Designer 2 Chunky machine with some knitpicks that’s been hiding in the stash for a while.
This shrug is worked cuff to cuff. The ends are seamed to create sleeves and a wide ribbing band creates a collar and extends the back length
Cast on 40, stitch size 2, knit 20 rows. Reform to 1X1 rib.
K2R size 2, K2R size 4, K2R size 6
Pull every 4th needle to hold, K2R. Return needles to WP. K2R, increasing by 1 stitch each side. K2R.
Repeat the above set until 60 stitches wide. Knit in patter, omitting the increases, 135 rows for a person about 5’ tall. Work more rows for a taller person. the begin decreasing 1 stitch each side every set until you get to 40 stitches wide. After last row of tucks, work 2 rows size 6, 2 rows size 4, and ONE row size 2. Pick up a length of ravel cord, and lay across the hooks. Knit one row size 2, catching the ravel cord into the row of knitting.
Knit 20 rows, stitch size 2. Using the ravel cord as a guide for how far down to go, reform these last 20 rows into 1X1 ribbing. Cast off. Remove ravel cord.
Purl side is the outside of this garment. Fold each ribbed cuff in half and seam neatly from the cuff, up the arm for a 12” seam. Repeat on the other side. Using a 2.75mm circular needle pick up stitches all around the opening. Knit in 1X1 ribbing a few rows. Every few rows, switch to one size larger needle to create a gradual flare for the ribbing. I used 2.75, 3.25, 3.75 and 4.0. Frequency and number of changes are not critical issues, just don’t do a jump of more than a couple of sizes in one row, or you’ll be able to see the transition. Continue until ribbing is as wide as you like it - about 4-6 inches. I continued till I had only enough yarn for the bind-off.
I love the softness of this yarn, but it’s a bit difficult to weave the ends in securely enough so they don’t poke out their tails a bit.
