As of 11-17-2015, my husband and I have been together 21 years. While we were dating, in 1995, I crocheted him a sweater. He never wore it. Ever. He said it was too warm.
I commented recently (as I make sweaters for our daughter often) there was no point in ever making him anything else. He said he would wear a vest. (He does have one store-bought knitted vest he wears). So I’m putting my crochet time where his mouth is and making him a vest for Christmas.
Pattern says K hook. I had to go down to an H (!) to get gauge.
Errata for the cable stitch pattern noted.
My dh has a very athletic figure with a narrow waist & broad shoulders. His store-bought vest he likes so well has a 34” waist & tapers up to 42” chest. So I’ll do the same here, starting with the 34” stitch counts, & increasing up to the 42”. I tried doing the 42” from the start, and it just looked huge, I knew he would want something more fitted. I think this plan should work well.
Also, I started on the back. While the diagonal texture is cool, it doesn’t really read at all in this handpainted yarn. So I think I will just do TSS on the back for ease of working quickly, & the back & front will match.

Ok. I have not had time to work on this since the night I swatched.
Took measurements off his other vest & wrote them in the book. I actually need to start with the 34” size. His other vest goes from 15” to 21” over the lower body.
But 15” is the ribbing, the body starts 17” wide at the bottom. If I increase a stitch on each side of the back 8x, that will increase 4”. I think I will put them at the ‘dart’ locations, that will look nice. Doing inc every 3rd row.
In the front I will put the increases on either side of the cable panel so it tapers up from the 34” plain panel stitch counts to the 42” ones.
About 20 rows in now on the back. Fabric is lovely but I hope I don’t regret buying the sport yarn instead of the fingering. Sport was closer to the pattern yarn, but I’m paranoid about it being too heavy & him not wearing it. Well too late now! I shall solider on. If he won’t wear it I guess I will, we’re close in size ;)

I’m alternating skeins at the left side of the work to avoid pooling. And still, even with all the increases, getting pooling. In just one spot. Ugh.

Up to back armhole shaping. This yarn is gorgeous! Still thinking I would have been better off with the fingering-wt tho.

Back finished. It’s gorgeous! Will I get this done in time? We shall see…. Haven’t had much time to work on it. And he’s been staying up later than normal too! But if he doesn’t like it, he’s a looney. Of course, he did marry me, so I know he’s looney.

I’ve been too busy to update! Front almost finished. Love working the cables! They are fun & the pattern is easily memorized.

Well yesterday he finally wore it! And looked awesome & got several compliments. So yay!!

I should add - I see I got too busy to update the finish. It was almost done Christmas morning. At 2 am I decided I wanted some sleep, & wrapped it with the ribbing about 3/5 done. He opened it that morning, then I finished it in the car that afternoon driving up to my parents house, so technically it was finished by Christmas ;)
