SUMMARY:
This pattern is awesome, easy, very flattering, and very easy to alter. Highly recommended. I added additional body shaping and drastically altered the neckline & designed my own shawl collar.

Oct 26:
swatched with several hooks, with 7 stitch gauge was still too big (18=4”) but didn’t want to use a smaller hook (fabric too dense) so making the 36 to get 40 at this gauge.

Want a v-neck so modifying start/increases. Only chained 52 to start (less 10 each side). Doing one of 8 increases right at each edge. Will gauge where to add back in stitches at edge as I go.

Hmm. Looking at my start (8 rows total / 3 increase rows) I think it’s going to be too close at the neck. I think I will rip it out & restart with a longer chain, eliminating a few rows for a lower starting neckline/wider V.

After looking at my start on my shoulders, I think it will be just right. One if the major advantages of top-down construction - the ability to try it on! Wish I was further along, but not much time to work on it lately.

I hope I have enough yarn….according to the pattern I need 7 balls but only 6 were to be had…. In my experience I always seem to wind up with leftovers according to pattern qtys, and my neck alteration will save some yarn, so fingers crossed. Another advantage of top down, I can shorten it if needed ;) or find some coordinating yarn for hems & trim.

11-9
Got a lot done today! Finished yoke & joined for sleeves. I did take 4 stitches (2sc & 2ch) out of the sleeves & give them to the fronts so I would have more boob room. Yoke fit much better after I did that! LOVE my v-neck mods. If I have enough yarn I want to add a shawl collar.

Halfway thru waist decreases, and finished off first two balls. Really hoping I don’t run out of yarn because I would really like to add a shawl collar. Going to move on to sleeves next so I’ll have an accurate idea of yarn remaining as I move thru the lower body.

I did reposition the decreases slightly, and am doing 6 on the 2nd & 3rd decrease rounds, to reduce out the 2 extra stitches per side I took from the sleeves & gave to the front.

I finished sleeve 1 & started sleeve 2. Definitely need the 7th ball & I only have 6! Found one in a destash, thank goodness, paid & it’s on the way.

Am changing sleeve construction. The pattern said to work in spiral rounds for the sleeves. I saw a noticeable difference in my fabric doing that. In part from the texture, in part because I had been alternating 2 balls on the body as each hank of this yarn is so different, after 6 rows on the sleeve with only one ball in a spiral I hated it. Went back to two balls working in joined rounds & alternating right side/wrong side & it looks great. Putting the seam at the underarm.

Did a few short rows at the elbow for some elbow room. Also did sc in the 3rd loop instead of blo for my ribbing, & slst into 3 stitches for every 2 rows so it would make more of a tighter cuff. Wondering if I should have done it deeper too.

Finished sleeve 2! Thank goodness for weekends. I was developing 2nd sleeve syndrome & needed to power through it. Hope I can keep up my mojo for the body. 17g left of my two sleeve balls.

12-04-2015

Finished body Monday (11/30), finished ribbing yesterday (12/3). Working on button bands. Making them with shallow single crochet for sturdiness & thats the texture I want. Did some decreases along the neck edge, it was a little too loose.

Made lots of progress on shawl collar last night. Hoping to finish tonight!

12-09-2015

Thought I was going to finish last night but fell asleep in my chair again.

Playing ‘yarn chicken’ on this one. Bet I will have about 10 yds left if I’m lucky!

Collar is turning out nicely, but I think I should have skipped the last increase row. Debating redoing to that point but feeling lazy & wanting to be done! I think I will block & see if that helps.

12-10-2015

Done! Just sewed on the last button. I did decide to rip back the last 4 rows on the collar & eliminate the final increase, & it lays much better now. Love!! Will wear to work tomorrow, though it still needs a final wash & block.

Oh, I have 6.8 grams of yarn left!! Close call!

So excited to wear this! I put up a few detail pics. I love my collar, and the way I altered the button bands & ribbing. It looks more like knitting in these stitches, though the tweedy yarn obscures it somewhat.

I think I’m going to frog this. Gained weight, haven’t worn it in years, and love the yarn. Seems a shame to have it linger in the cedar chest.
