Notes

My gauge is looser than the pattern gauge. Usually I go down 2 needle sizes or choose another size to accommodate the gauge difference. However, this pattern offers only one size, 21”, unstretched. This is too big for my head, and with a needle two sizes smaller the resulting fabric is too stiff.

I prefer hats that fit snugly so that the brim stays put without falling down to obscure my vision. Snug enough so that a sudden wind cannot snatch it off my head. What works for me is an 18-19” circumference hat that stretches to fit my 22” head.

I did go down one needle size (US 9) although this still did not meet stitch gauge. But when I tried US 8, the chunky Quarry was too stiff, the fabric unmanageable, and neither of us was happy, lol.

So with my 3.5 st/in gauge on US 9 and preference for a more snug fit, I reworked numbers (cast-on, crown decreases). Thankfully this was easy to accomplish due to the straightforward pattern. After blocking, circumference was 19”. After stretching onto my head, circumference is 20”, just right for me.

I worry though that loose knitters like me may be disappointed in the limitations of the pattern sizing, especially if they are a bit inexperienced in adapting or modifying. If they stick to knitting the pattern’s one size, their hat may end up being quite large. There will be frustration.

The texture is incredible. The Lazulite colorway is deeply mysterious. The stitch pattern is enjoyable and a quick weekend project even for a slowish knitter like me.

Gauge US 9: 3.5 st/in; 5R/in.

Yarn: BT Quarry (66g)
•Brim color: Moonstone (24g)
•Body color: Lazulite (42g)

Mods:
• Long-tail cast on
•2 colors
•Smaller needle than recommended
•Smaller fit
•Rework number of cast-on stitches to accommodate stitch gauge and smaller fit preference
