The pattern instructions do not call for beads, but it’s easy to add them where you want. Just take care not to add so many as to turn the beret from it’s feather-light design into something so weighty that it will flatten your hairdo.

Using the crochet hook method makes it easy to play with your own design in more than one color of bead. I used Miyuki size 6/0 glass seed beads. The slightly darker is #1827 Amethyst-lined Aqua AB/102 beads approx 8.5g. The lighter is #274 Amethyst-lined Crystal AB/24 beads approx 2 g.

For this variation, I added 4 rounds to the depth to make a slightly more slouchy tam style. To adapt the blocking, I used a stack of 3 plates (rather than 1 plate for the flatter French-style beret).
