Notes

I am simplifying the pattern in so far as I will use solid colours instead of colour degradations. Nevertheless this will be a bit of a challenge for me, as this is my first intarsia project and I have done stranded knitting only in the round up to now.

I am using mainly reclaimed cashmere yarn: I had unravelled several sweaters from e-bay and all those lovely yarn balls have been sitting in my boxes for quite some time, waiting for the perfect project. I am knitting Bosphorus with 2 to 3 strands, depending on the orginial weight - Orchid and Off-white are slightly thinner, so I take 3 strands of these colours, whereas Navy, Plum, Azur and Sea-green are a bit thicker and can be taken doubled. The resulting weight is a light fingering.

July 7:
I had started with full skeins for all 6 colours but after the first few pattern rows I realized that this is not working - I had to detangle the threads several times per row. So I decided to use those little intarsia bobbins for the three CC, even if this means that I have to sew in more threads at the end. And they really help, I hang them onto stitchmarkers near the CC stripes when I don’t use the colours. Thus, they are out of the way and do not interfere with the three MC.
This is probably no news for experienced intarsia knitters, but for me it was something to learn…

July 13:
Hmmm… I am not sure if I like my colour combination. The navy is very dark, so the balance is affected. I am thinking of frogging the whole thing and starting over with only three colours: red as MC for both sides, navy as MC2 and only white for the CC stripes. That could look nice… Will think this over for a few days, putting this project aside in favour of another Foxy hat for the nephews. :-)

September 6:
After a lot of rethinking I really frogged all I had knitted so far and cast on with completely new colours. Red for both side panels, dark fuchsia for the centre panel and off-white for the CC stripes. Have to see what it will look like when I have knitted some 20 cm. Up to now I am quite content.

June 13, 2015:
Finally finished this project… It took ages because I could only knit on it at home - all those little skeins tended to mix up and after a while the scarf grew just to much for a to-go-project.

I did not like the ribbing and did not want to pin those pikes as in the instruction.
So, for the starting end of the scarf, I inserted a needle in the row above the row with the yarn overs (“eyelet row”), cut the thread in the yarn over row and unravelled it cautiously. Then I knitted the eyelet row (knitting “downwards”) again and knitted the back row. Then I knitted the border pattern (coming from the right side, joining it with the live stitches I had just generated. Regarding the ratio of knitting stitches together, I just winged it… sometimes joining one live stitch with the left-most stitch of the border, sometimes joining two life stitches with it.

At the other end of the scarf I did the same. After the eyelet row I knitted the border perpendicular to the main direction, trying to mimic the ratio of stitches from the starting end.

I still have to wash and block it and then to take better pictures… :-)
