Notes

Converted to in the round to save yarn and scaling down.

Didn’t end up handing out witches this year (2015) as I didn’t start them soon enough, had other more important projects (chemo caps for a family member) on my plate. So I handed out extras from previous years and had just enough.

First draft:CO 4, and make about 2/3 as many rows, for example when instructed to Ss 3 rows, I only made 2. St counts after inc and dec rows were also 2/3. Note: 4 sts for nose…a bit big, but that’s witches for ya. Used co tail to french knot the eyes, will embroider mouth with red maybe. Named her Hazel.

1/3 scale

Named her Ike, short for Icord because that’s pretty much what she is ;)

CO 2, knit 1 row when instructed to Ss 3 rows, all stitch counts are 1/3…or close to it.

Still need to tweak it. Subtract a row after the arms. Maybe start actually marking the brim rows. This is one case in which I will shrug my “marker schmarker” attitude. Ike took me an hour. Hazel took me 2.

Ike mark 2

As I started a second Ike, I got halfway up the skirt when I realized I had my nose too close to the pattern and wasn’t even watching her take shape. I’m comfortable enough with the shaping concepts and techniques now that I can just watch her take shape and feel my way through as opposed to a more mathematically measured approach. I cleaned her up a lot by not knitting so many increase and decrease rows, more stockinette, and having no fewer than 4 sts around. Ike mk 1 is so lumpy compared to mk 2.

Will love coming back to this next October so I can have a whole flock of Ikes.

Here is a rough estimate of my st count for each row, from the bottom up:

Pull a 10” tail through all 4 lps, tighten to make hat pointy, backstitch brim, make hair.
Tadone!

Something close to that--her body before arms is a bit too tall, and her arms could be longer, as could her nose maybe. Hat brim too wide, maybe try 10 sts. Decrease sharply to 6 after brim, then graduate to 4.

October 26, 2016 Ike mk 3

With black, leave a 10” tail, and pinhole CO 2.

Divide and proceed with your preferred circular knitting method.

Pull a 12-14” tail through all four loops and tighten to make hat pointy.

Use Caston tail to pull bottom of witch up into her. This gives her structure. Also use this tail to embroider eyes and secure the hat brim thus: fold brim at purl ridge, use backstitch through marked rows to hold brim flat. Finish off this tail.

Thread hat tail through hat and out back of the head to form hair. I sent it to her left side, tied a knot, made 4 loops evenly spaced atound the back of her head, tying a knot after each loop, tucked the tail inside her head/body. Snipped the loops to form the hair. Leave them like this for straight crazy hair. Carefully pick them apart for wavy cute hair, or carefully brush them with a comb for bushy hair.
