Started this the other day, wrote up the beginning description, and apparently didn’t save it?
Wanted to make another hat -something to donate to one of the winter hat charities going on right now, assuming it doesn’t get claimed around here (aka Brett).
I’ve had this yarn i dyed years ago, but the colors i went with, paired the the yarn fiber, just haven’t seemed to work well for anything. It’s too soft, too slick, bordering on camouflage when knit up.
So yeah -maybe a hat. A low-key hat following that last method. Only that means no particular gauge, and in this case it’s not a very woolly, sticky fiber. May not be super warm.
And in losing the posting i started the other day, i seem to have lost all the math i did.
I got 6-7 stitches per inch, mostly 6.
I’ve got 152 stitches around, which i think was maybe too many -it’s going to be a little baggy, at least on my head. Wishing I’d stopped an increase round or two early, which would have put it at 144 or 136 stitches around. Noting that here, but also realize it’ll vary from hat to hat depending on yarn, tension, needles etc.
Anyhow, after stopping at 152 around i started just knitting stockinette. After 18 rounds I’m switching to k2p2 (152 is divisible by 4, so that’s good). Since it’s been baggy so far, and i know I’ll knit looser with 2x2 rib, I’ll switch down from US5 to US4. Maybe that will at least snug up the large brim (which I’m planning to knit about 16 rounds of before starting bind-off - must remember to place stitch marker before switching needle!)

Uh oh.
This yarn only stretched out a bit more with a wash, and then some roughhousing in a bowl of scalding hot, soapy water (ouch), and then Brett ran it through the dryer with wet towels.
Nope -didn’t shrink.
Good thing i knit this for a donation drive -someone out there has to have a big head, big hair, big afro, big, i dunno maybe some pompom pigtails they want to hide under a hat.
Whatever. It IS super soft!
This hat is being knit as a donation for the Knit The Rainbow charity:

I became aware of this group after Cindy, owner of the local Harps & Thistles Yarn Emporium, mentioned it in her regular email newsletter.

Didn’t do a proper circular cast on that i could snug up -as with the last hat i just did regular cast on, it’s got some tiny gaps, and I’ll fill them in when weaving in the CO tail.
For mostly acrylic yarn, i really like the feel. I think this was a donation/cast-off yarn from someone else many many years ago.
Probably knitting on a needle size smaller than the pattern or yarn calls for, but i don’t want to risk a lacy hat.
