This is because of this post: https://www.knittingparadise.com/threads/i%E2%80%99m-conf...
I did the backwards loop cast on. 90 stitches. No reason, it just seemed about right.
I did six rounds of stockinette, for the same reason.
Now, at 4 o’clock in the morning, I’ve begun the yo, k2tog section.
I just found the original source of the pattern:

For once, the pattern calls for a short circular needle, and I have switched from a very long circular doing Magic Loop, to the shortest cable in this set.
Because of the (yo, k2tog) results in one stitch remaining every time!

Nearing the needed length, but it does seem to be spiralling opposite from what’s shown in the pattern.

I had thought I had cast on 90 stitches. Seeing that my spiral is opposite others’, I stopped and counted. There are only 89 stitches! That explains why the opposite spiralling!
Next hat will be on an even number!

So, after a bunch of rounds, I worked one round all knit - decreasing one at the end of the round. Now that it’s at an even number, I’m continuing the (yo, k1).

88 stitches.
Rounds of k2tog decreases after each stitch marker, placed 22 stitches apart. (i.e. k2tog, work yo, k2tog to next marker.)
Once all the yarnovers were used up, rounds of k2tog, k to 2sts before marker, ssk.
When down to 3 sts between markers, k2tog, k1 to bring it down to 8 stitches; cinch ‘em up and weave in ends.
