60 sts/side of larger square.
5 mm crochet hook for crochet hook cast on.
On every row, slip first stitch knitwise; purl last stitch.
Centre double decrease: k2tog twice.
Darkest navy:
#1 begun January 19; completed January 27; 105g
#2 begun January 27; completed February 2; 95g
#3 begun February 2; completed ?; 85g
#4 begun February ?; completed March 4; 90g
OK. If ever there were any doubt that not all worsted weight yarns are equal; the above should erase it.
Same needle.
Same knitter.
Same number of stitches.
Presumably same tension - tight.
Yet four different finished weights!
The heaviest one is visibly larger, but it won’t matter in the long run, because garter stitch is so forgiving.

Progress photo posted of the first two squares - one done and one in progress. The colour is off. It’s a navy blue so dark as to seem black. It can only be differentiated from black by placing it next to something that is black.
The four corner squares will be solid navy, though not necessarily identical in shade. That won’t matter, because they’ll be so far apart when on a bed. It will be noticiable when folded; not a problem.

I think that the perimeter blocks will all be solid colours, no stripes, and the interior blocks will be stripes the same as I did for Rob’s blanket.
Two photos added just to show someone how the back side of the join looks - first one is relaxed, second is under tension. Of course, now that I’ve got the photos, I can’t remember who asked. I’ve looked in my inboxes - here, KP, Yahoo - and can’t find that request. Rats!!

Photos added of progress so far - four pieces on floor.

There are 40 ‘units’ of the total 120 done. One third done!!!! Might I actually finish this before mid-July??

120/56 = 100%/x% = 46.6666666% done!!! Getting there!!

Not keeping records very well.
Just finished the beginning of the joining of the first pair left and right quadrants. It’s now officially a beast to carry around everywhere.
It is now 66.6666666667% done!!!
Wedding is July 16th.

Now the two top ‘quarters’ are joined and that joining rectangle was completed just after the photo showing it. The two bottom ‘quarters’ have just been joined; this is still portable and goes everywhere with me.

The actual knitting is completed! All ends have been woven in! It’s withstood a trip through the washer and dryer! All that remains - already begun - is the border. A simple one - one round of single crochet and one round of reverse single crochet. Photo of completed blanket - tonight or tomorrow, I hope!
Technical notes: Finishing with a mitered square in the center called for two different techniques. Sliding Loop on the right-hand edge, and knit last stitch on right side along with next stitch on the square on the left.
Not counting the weaving in of ends, there is not a single sewn stitch in the whole thing!

1:48 AM was the moment the last tail of the second round of the border was done. I made it!! The wedding is today, and it will be presented thereafter.
No more deadline-knitting!!!

Photos as it was nearing completion added.
Photos taken on the morning of the wedding - July 16, 2016 - with a cell phone, because the camera case was forgotten at home - added.
A few closeup photos of the ‘seams’ from the back side shown.
The last two photos at the bottom are me carrying it in a huge front-hung back-pack at LaRonde (a local Six-Flags amusement park) during its final days of construction - after the ‘halves’ had been joined, but before the border. The border was done while driving to Maine and before going to sleep overnight before the wedding.
