My modifications:
slip first stitch purlwise every row.
knit last stitch every row.
First square is thirty stitches on a side; i.e. cast on sixty. Crochet hook cast-on.
Yarn from Goodwill. Acrylic. Somewhat fuzzy; I guess it had been labeled as “Brushed Acrylic”, when manufactured. Mostly frogged; one label-less ball never used.

So far, I’m happy with the reversibility of this way of making mitred squares.

I seem to have goofed. There are only 28 stitches along the two edges.
Hmm … I just recounted the cast-on chain. 58, not 60. So, my base number is 29, not 30. No problem. OR it might be 30 after all. I’ll look again after a sleep.

So, I hadn’t miscounted this morning. But fudging works. I now have 30 stitches picked and will cast on another 30.

When picking up along an edge, I pull up a stitch through the back loop only.

Partway through the never-used ball of yarn, a knot. A granny-knot. Gently teased open, and added as all the previous tiny balls had been.

Ten 30-stitch mitred squares long.
Three 10-stitch mitred squares done on each end.
24” leftover yarn!
All ends woven in.
Time to launder and see if the old/reused yarn brightens.

Well, there’s still a visible difference in the whiteness of the never-before-used yarn and the previously-used yarn. No problem! Anyone studying it that closely hasn’t anything better to do!
