This is the first in a series of hats I’m making in an attempt to duplicate the hat from the movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ a 2004 American comedy-drama film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Wes Anderson. This hat misses the mark on two accounts: 1.) I made the crown too short (didn’t add non-decrease rows between each centered double decrease row. 2.) The color ‘Poppy’ is too red. The next version of this hat will be knit using Jamieson’ 462 Ginger instead to more closely match the color of the hat from the movie.
I used a long-tail cast on and knit 8” of 150-stitches of Knit-Purl using 16” circular needles with a needle size of US 1.5
Once the hat measured 8” from the cast-on edge, I used a centered double decrease at 6 equally spaced positions by placing markers when knitting the final non-decrease round at the following positions: the beginning of the round, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125. When knitting the first decrease row I began the double decrease using the three stitches before the marker, beginning at the following positions: 23, 48, 73, 98, 123, and 148. I didn’t add non-decrease rows between each decrease row and this resulted in a shorter, flatter crown. I like the look and feel of the hat but it definitely missed the mark in terms of duplicating the authentic Zissou’ hat.
