Visor
size 4 needles
Visor is constructed like a toe up sock toe
Judy’s magic cast on
Cast on 80 stitches total, 40 stitches each on front and back needles.
Work up from cast on in Half Fisherman’s Rib
Increase every knit row for the first 5 rows then increase every other knit row until you have 54 stitches on each needle (total 108) on the front and back of the visor
Visor Insert should be slightly larger to stretch visor into shape
Total of 16-20 rows
Cut out cardboard visor insert first and when happy with size and shape use as a template for a waterproof vinyl insert.
Visor dimensions without insert
8.5” long. ( 22cm)
2.5” depth (6.5cm)’
Ear flaps
knitted 2 at a time and must be knitted as mirror images (ie when right or wrong sides are placed together, they match each other exactly. )
Size 4 needles
Provisional cast on 4 stitches
Increase on back edges every knit row
Increase on front edges every other knit row until 35 stitches on each ear flap.
This increase method makes a less acute angle slope in the front edge to bring flaps forward to cover the ears.
Half fisherman’s rib ( every other row knit and then purl 1 knit 1 below every alternate row
Join with visor for total of 130 stitches. Easily divisible by 5 for later crown shaping.
Knit the crown for about 4.5”
Crown shaping:
(Makes R leaning decreases).
Start decreases about 4 1/2 “ up from top of visor which is about row 25 (ie 25 v notches up from top edge of visor.)
Divide stitches into sections with each stitch marker placed after a knit 1 below stitch.
Only work decreases on rows that are purl /k1 below. Work to 2 stitches before each marker. Slip second to last stitch ( a purl stitch) to RH needle then bring up bar from stitch below on next stitch.
Slip first slipped stitch back on LH needle then k2tog ( should be 3 strands)
Decreases are worked over a height of about 2 1/4 “ which is about 17 rows.
Top of visor to crown is about 7”
When the hat crown measured 7” in height I just quickly finished by decreasing every stitch until there were only about 10 stitches remaining
Bear Ears.
Knitted like toe up socks.
Size 2 ( 2.75mm) needles
Magic cast on 12 stitches front and back needles (24 stitches total).
Knit one round.
Work second round as k1 p 1
Knit 3rd round but increase 1 stitch each beginning and end of needle.
K 1 below and purl 1 as set up in row 2
Continue to increase to 20 stitches
Work in Half Fisherman’s Rib until 18-20 rows then bind off.
Stuff the ears with filler.
Sew ears to crown of hat.
I-cord edging
Using size 2 needles, work an applied 4 stitch (ie 4 stitches + the picked up stitch) I-cord around perimeter of hat and across the top where the visor joins the crown.
Keep the i-cord fairly tight when rounding the bottom of the ear flaps to encourage them to slightly bulge out and hug around the wearer’s ears. If the I-cord is applied too loosely, the ear flaps will flare out and away from the wearer’s ears.
Make two 4 or 5 stitch I-cord strings from the bottom of each ear flap. ~ 10-12 “
