Inspired by a crocheted hat I saw on Pinterest which I think is Duck Cap by Ciprianne Nolan .

Finished Dimensions:
5.5 “ tall (14cm)
12” (31cm) diameter unstretched

Provisional cast on 80 stitches then knit up the body of hat in yellow yarn in stockinette stitch until 3.75” (9.5cm)
For crown divided into 10 segments and reduced 1 stitch / segment every other row. (about 15 rows )

Picked up provisional cast on in orange and garter stitch knit ( no seam, helix style) the brim for about 12 rows. On the final row did German short rows over 24 stitches I think about 10 times to create the duck bill. Cast off using Jeny’s Surprisingly stretchy cast off.

Applied I-cord edging around the bottom of the hat, (except for the duck bill part) keeping it fairly loose so as not to inhibit stretching over a baby’s head.
Could probably get a similar look by just knitting 5-6 rows of stockinette to make a rolled edge.

Sewed on the button eyes and two little black dots for nostrils.

Next time I may just knit the whole thing in garter stitch.
Could use this technique to make a baby chick, or a bluebird.
