If you make this pattern: the written instructions are a bit confusing, but all you really need to keep in mind is it is 5 SC going up and down between the peaks and valleys.
Note to self: the PDF I purchased on Etsy is in my Documents/Patterns folder as AlpenhausThrowBlanketCrochetPattern.pdf. (I do wish designers would make the pattern purchasable on Ravelry.)
While home for Thanksgiving, Katrina asked for a squishy throw for her new studio apartment in DC, and after discussing colors and patterns, she chose this. I love making bespoke blankets for my kids. Well, for anyone, actually!
Swatch:
- 8” for 2 peaks
- 4.5” for 11 rows
- 15 g
Based on this swatch I should do 10 peaks if I want a 40” width. If I want 60” height, that would be roughly 150 rows. So, I could do 10 stripes of 15 rows each.

As it turns out, I can get exactly 15 rows with a 100 g skein of yarn, with just a little ball left over that’s not enough for another complete row. The edges are fine, so I won’t even need a border for this little throw. Too bad it’s an even number of stipes and I won’t end on the Ecru to make it more ballanced, but I think the 3/2 proportion is nice and more important than the color balance.

I’m working on the 8th stripe at the moment, I’m loving this pattern, and the blanket is very snuggly. I should be able to finish it off tonight. It’s a great evening, after work project.
I just timed it and it takes me 10 minutes to do one row. So that means this blanket is going to take me 25 hours. Wow! I would not have guessed that much, but I guess that makes sense since I work on it a few hours a day for a few weeks.
So, I will end up with 6 skeins of Ecru and 5 skeins of Misty Pink left when I’m done. I think I’ll pick a baby blanket pattern and make a second blanket with this yarn to use it up. Maybe the same pattern experimenting with allternating the colors in different numbers of rows? Or maybe another Around the Mossy Camel? I’m also going to have a skein and a half of the Vanna’s Choice Sage green left over from C’s scarf as well and that would blend well with these colors. Hmm…

I gifted this to Katrina on Christmas and it came out super cute. It softened up after a wash and tumble dry. I wish I had made it a little wider (and, in the end, I only did 9 stripes to keep it in proportion), but Katrina pointed out it’s a great size for wrapping herself in when she’s working at her desk and she already has a giant mosaic blanket I made for her a few years ago for cocooning on the couch.
She was surprised because I made it in the time she was back in DC between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which was fun.
