I finished the scarf part today. I made it 195 sts long and did the houndstooth the long way, that way I can make the hood part come off so it’s the same direction as the pattern on the scarf part.

I don’t want the back of the hood to be pointy, so this tutorial suggests how to make it slightly rounded.

Finished! I made the hood 58 sts (in the end). Since I wasn’t using an actual pattern, I first followed the advice of a YouTube tutorial to make the hood the width of your head plus 2 inches but that was comically too big. (Much to the amusement of my family!) On the second try, I over-compensated and used 50 sts, which is what the person in the tutorial I linked above used, but that was too small. Finally, I used the 58 sts and that was the Goldilocks number -- just right!

If I do this scarf again, the only change I’d make is to make the scarf part longer.
