I’ve decided I’ll use 1/2 a cake each to make six large squares then another two cakes to border them all. (Originally this was going to be a Virus Blanket but I just didn’t like this colorway with that lacy pattern.)

Wow, this is ugly! If they swapped the blue for avocado green they could call this colorway ’70s Kitchen.
One half of the skein (100 g) was 14 rows, which is a 17” square. So this will really be lap blanket size when done. That’s fine, I’m not going to invest any more money (or time) into this since I made a bad color choice. Plus the abrupt color changes are a little awkward. There aren’t many patterns that work well with though I’ll be curious to see what others come up with.
The yarn itself is very nice to work with. And it’s soft. I do wish it was machine washable, though.

Finished the sixth square today and joined. Made a bunch of mistakes whip stitching it together but I was interrupted by a trip to the emergency room with my husband, so I blame it on being flustered (he’s fine but needed 20 stitches in his eyelid!) Not excited enough by this project to take it out and re-do, so on to the two skeins for the border.

Finished with a row of single crochet then a row of crab stitch. Just need to block it tomorrow then it will be done.
Bottom line on this project -- yarn is nice but this particular colorway doesn’t do it for me. (I went with gold because I thought it might match the living room walls, but it’s a greenish sort of gold.) I chose the spiral granny because I thought it would minimize the weirdness of the color changes, which is does but not enough. (You can see the step pattern that it avoids in the border where I did not use a spiral.) The original pattern that I based this on is nice and would be fun to do in a large square with a gradual changing yarn, like the original. The super simple stitch is very meditative.

I have to be fair to this blanket! It turned out to be a perfect size for snuggling on the couch and it’s super soft. It has become a very well-appreciated blanket around here, even if it is ugly.
