If you don’t think this bag is big enough, see pictures with 1/2 gallon of milk in it for example. I never want more than one 1/2 gallon of milk per bag no matter what the bag is.
I’ve made a number of market bags in chain mesh done in a spiral which is challenging to keep track of where you are. Clare’s triple crochet stitches into the trc stitches of previous row is so much easier. I think not quite as stretchy, which I like. And so much faster to make. I don’t know why I didn’t come across this pattern sooner.
This size may look small, but put a half gallon of milk in it and it stretches with several inches above the milk. Holds a lot more than it looks.
I modified Clare’s pattern slightly because mine is made for grocery shopping and I don’t like toting heavy bags.
R1: In double magic circle CH 4, DC, CH1 11 times, 12 DC.
R2: CH4, DC, CH1im same stitch as ss join; DC, CH1, DC, CH1 in each DC around, 24 DC.
R3: CH5, (TRC, CH1) in each DC, 24 TRC.
R4: CH5, TRC, CH1 in same stitch as ss join;(TRC, CH1, TRC, CH1) in each TRC around, 48 TRC.
R5 - R14: CH5, (TRC, CH1) in each TRC of previous row.
Edge R1 sc in ea stitch and ch1 around.
Edge R2 sc in ea stitch around.
Edge R3 sc in ea stitch around.
Handle prep: place a marker in border R3 joining stitch, fold bag in half and place a marker in fold across from first marker. Fold bag in half again (now in fourths) and place a marker at the other 2 folds not yet marked.
Handle R1: CH 40 (not a shoulder strap), attach chain to marked border sc to left. Being careful not to twist the chain, place hook from back (ws) to front (rs) of that sc and with working yarn to the right of hook, yo complete sc; then in the same manner sc in next border sc to the left, turn,
Handle R2: sc in first ch of CH 40, missing the two attaching sc’s just made (and being careful to not twist chain), sc in ea ch across; 1 sc into next 2 border sc’s to the left, turn,
Handle R3: sc into first handle sc missing the two atraching sc’s, and in ea handle sc across, sc into border sc to the left, cut yarn. Weave on ends.
