Notes

Making size Med (40”), which will finish a little smaller, as I am doing narrower trim all around.

Needles:
#5 for the stockinette
#6 (rather than #4) for the garter (strange, but I swatched and need a larger needle rather than a smaller one for the garter stitch)
Signature straights for the back garter edge, then switched to 32” circs
Hook G (4.0 mm) for the crochet cast on
#7’s for the bind off

Using a kit that I purchased to make the Prism Technicolor Jacket, but had changed my mind on the pattern. The kit was expensive though, and had been languishing for years. This pattern uses the same yarn, so I thought I’d try to make it work. I definitely have more than enough total yardage.

Since I have 5 colors instead of 9, I’m doing 2 sections of each color (to equate to the 8 sections in the pattern), with the 5th color as trim and a divider between each section (instead of only as the outer border as per the pattern). The pattern calls for 1 skein each of the 8 colors, and 3 of the trim. I have 3 skeins of each color, so I’m thinking I should be fine. The trim is the only one that’s questionable, as I’m using that color more often, but much narrower for the outer border, so hopefully I’ll have enough.

It goes as follows:
A1 & 2: Arrroyo (color E from the kit)
A3 & 4: Orchard (color D from the kit)
A5 & 6: Ginger (color C from the kit)
A7 & 8: Blue Lagoon (color B from the kit)
B: Tumbleweed (color A from the kit)

Doing 18 rows of color A & 4 of color B for each section rather than 22 rows of A with no divider.
Also doing much narrower garter borders (18 rows instead of 38 for back and fronts, 18 instead of 35 for sleeves, and 19 instead of 29 for the collar).
For the sleeves, did 20 rows instead of 18 for colors A8-A4 (10 rows total extra) in order to add some length to the sleeves, which seemed rather short for my preference. I kept the 4 rows B for each the same, and did not adjust the striping for the sleeve caps, as it did in the pattern.

Decrease Rows: Did p2tog in the purl sections, instead of k2tog for all
In shaping sections, did ssk & ssp for left leans, k2tog & p2tog or right leans. For some reason, I did these on the edge instead of in a stitch or two as I normally would. Not sure why.
Did regular bind-offs in pattern.

Worked both fronts together, with let front first on needle when right side facing.

For the Right Front Armhole Shaping, I decreased at the end of RS rows rather than at the beginning of WS rows, so that I would be decreasing at the beginning and end of these rows. Not only is this simpler to keep track of, but also it will match the way it’s done on the back.

For the garter at the top of the fronts, I did not switch needle size.

3-Needle Bind Off:
Used #6 needle
RS together instead of WS. Tried it first with WS as per pattern, but got about half way through and didn’t like the ridge being on the right side, so I tinked back (no easy feat) and re-did it.
Bound off knitwise for 3-needle portion, but in pattern for the ribbing of the center back neck.

Sleeves:
1st increase row (4 sts evenly across) did kfb every 9th stitch.
Balance of increase rows, did M1R & L, 2 sts in from each edge.
Did these increase rows every 4th row instead of every 6 for the first 10 times (I wanted to increase a little more rapidly, to have roomier sleeves), and then every 6th for the remainder.

Front Garter Border:
There was a discrepancy in the pattern between the numbers to pick up in each section and the total to end up with, which did not add up, so I went with the individual numbers. I needed to adjust for the bottom bands, where I picked up 10 instead of 19, because I had made those narrower than the pattern (18 rows instead of 38). I also picked up 36 stitches along the back neck instead of 35, because the number of center stitches bound off was actually 38 instead of 37. And I picked up 136 instead of 140 above the garter edge to the shoulder band (17 sts for each 22-row color section).

So my total stitches for the front garter border was 344, broken out as follows:
10 each along the bottom bands (1 in each garter ridge & 1 in cast on edge)
136 each side above the garter bands to the shoulder bands (17 for each 22-row color section)
8 each side in the shoulder bands (per pattern)
36 along the back neck picked up 38 (one in each stitch) and decreased down on first row

Did a chain selvage for the garter border as follows: For every row, sl1 pwise wyif, knit to end
Knit 19 rows
K2togTbl bind-off with the #7 needle.

Note that I had a failed first attempt at the garter border, which I completely finished, and then completely ripped out, as it was unacceptable. I had struggled trying to pick up the required number of stitches in a way that looked neat and even, so I just picked up one in every row and decreased down to the required number on the 4th row after the pick up (right side). I tried first on the first row (wrong side), but it was too noticeable in the contrast color off the body when done that way. Then I tried it on the second row to bring it farther in from the edge & work on the right side, but it was still too noticeable. I then tried it on the third row, but that still looked bad on the right side. I finally did it on the 4th row, which still wasn’t great, but would have to do.
Thing was, it didn’t do at all, as the collar buckled badly, and it looked so sloppy and ruffly on the inside edge as to be unacceptable. The stitches themselves looked awful or the first 4 rows until the decrease. I don’t know why, except that maybe it was too crowded? So I ripped it back and began again, picking up 17 for each 22-row color section, instead of beginning with 22 and then decreasing down to either 17 or 18. By doing this, I ended up with 136 instead of 140 above the garter edge to the shoulder band, but it was much less crowed for the first few rows, and looked much better.

Finished Measurements (wet & stretched on blocking board):
Across Back at Underarm: 20”
Across Top Back at Shoulder Seams: 17.5”
Length of Armhole: 9”
Length of Body from Underarm: 20” (17.5” when dry)
Length of Sleeves from Underarm: 19”
Width of Sleeve at Underarm: 7”
Width of Sleeve at Top of Cuff: 4.5”
Width of Body at Bottom Edge (curved, point to point): 34”
