This is another one of those patterns that just compels you to make it exactly as pictured. At least it was for me. I bought the book sight unseen just because of the picture of this afghan on the cover.
It’s such an interesting construction, too. I got four squares done before other, more pressing projects took precedence, causing this one to take a back seat. Unfortunately, it took me 6 years to get back to it!
But get back to it I did, and I finally finished it, after all these years! Woohooo! This was my oldest WIP. I started it before I even joined Ravelry. Too bad that I didn’t do the entire thing assembly line fashion though, because those first 4 blocks that I did were significantly smaller in gauge than the remaining 8. And they seem a little flatter, too (although that might just be from sitting stacked on top of each other for 6 years). Oh well, I don’t think those things are too terribly noticeable. I can see it, but probably no one else will. I still think it’s pretty spectacular looking, which will distract from the imperfections.
This is how the yarn amounts split out:
Black: 855.5 Grams/1572.74 Yards/4.32 Skeins
Blue: 50 Grams/91.92 Yards/0.25 Skeins
Turqua: 92.5 Grams/170.05 Yards/0.47 Skeins
Light Mint: 92 Grams/169.13 Yards/0.47 Skeins
Gold: 138 Grams/253.7 Yards/0.7 Skeins
Carrot: 340.5 Grams/625.97 Yards/1.72 Skeins
Cornmeal: 53.5 Grams/98.35 Yards/0.27 Skeins
Beware though, that the amounts for the Gold & Carrot are suspect, because I was working on my Spanish Tiles Afghan at the same time, and they both used those colors. I bought the yarn for both afghans together, from various sources, and the receipts are not itemized by color, making it difficult to know in the end how much I used of each (this was back in the day before I kept track of such things for Ravelry. I’m much better about that now!). So either I used some of the skein of Gold for the other afghan, or I used more than 1 of the Carrot for this one, because I have approximately the same amount left over of each, and there’s really no way that should happen. The pattern uses more of the Carrot than the Gold.
The Black amount is a bit suspect as well. I’m not sure if I actually did break into a fifth skein for this project, or if maybe I used some of that black for something else.
If it’s any help, the pattern calls for 4 skeins of the Black, and 1 skein each of the other colors.
