After reading a bunch of reviews and hearing that 56 sts was pretty snug I cast on 84 on a set of 5 size 10.5 dpns. Followed pattern exactly as written otherwise. I had about 75% of a skein to start with and it was perfect. I had maybe 2 yards leftover.

Hat fits perfectly! I’m totally smitten with it and have already been wearing it.

This only took me about 3 1/2 hours to knit!
