Notes

Knitting this again with a few changes from pattern and from my first attempt including:

  • no Dolman sleeves
  • add pockets
  • make neck opening narrower
  • make entire garment longer
  • have only one vertical panel on front, not two
  • use vertical panel, Chart E, in other orientation in body
  • use corrugated ribbing for borders
  • change Foxglove (pink) to Dahlia (orange) in shoulder yoke Chart F
  • I may use clasp closures as I hate working buttonholes in corrugated ribbing, especially with another layer of knit facing at back. (Will wait to order so I can check size)

As I knit the first one I thought it had an Autumn feel with the purple and orange. Autumn is my fave season so I shall emphasize these colours. I found I kept looking at the back more than the front. I really love the small motifs especially with various blue tones. They remind me of reflections of leaves in water. So I am not knitting two vertical front panels.

I am not keeping track of yarn quantities this time. Quite likely they will be similar to first one.

For pocket inserts see detailed notes in my Kilim Cardigan.

After section A this fits so I think I am OK reknitting the S/M but on 3m needles. I really like the look of the front panel Chart E knit into the body. (I worked this panel only on 2.75m for waist shaping.)

I worked Section B as before, only increasing at under-arms every inch or so for bust ease until I got to round 36. I decided to work my sleeve increases over 12 rows this time; not 8, increasing at row ends by 10 stitches. I made minor colour changes around rounds 55 - 60.

I decided to go with a completely different insert at front openings and used a chart from Alice Starmore’s Charts for Color Knitting. I revised a version with mirror image leaves for balance of left and right side.

When setting up Chart F I changed the colours in the squares (rows 2 -6) to a brighter look. I also swapped Dalia for Foxglove. I worked a few less neck decreases so the opening would not be as wide.

When I worked neck rib I picked up 147 stitches around (less than pattern due to less decreases) I worked 6 rounds in K1P1 rib. Then I worked 1 round in plain st st decreasing 17 stitches somewhat evenly around to 130 stitches. Then I set up K2 P2 corrugated rib in Mallard (teal) and various purples like half of the other ribs. This was done to avoid having the neck rib stand out too far from the neck which is what happens if stitches are not reduced somewhere in the height of the rib. Reducing would have been awkward in the middle of 2/2 corrugated rib.

My steeks were felted before cutting and are now all stitched down so I am completely finished except sewing on my fasteners when they arrive. I will then post more pics.

The hooks/clasps I originally put on were annoying. The hooks tangled and stretched the floats. Other sweaters stored together also risked being clawed and damaged by the hook on these closures. They also opened unless under tension.

I removed the clasps and ripped back the right front band to 6 rounds, reknit the 2/2 rib rounds inserting 4-stitch one row buttonholes in centre. I inserted 6 stitch regular 2 row buttonholes in the facing. I stitched the larger buttonholes down a little back from front buttonhole. I find this makes fastening and unfastened the buttons a little easier when there are two layers

Now I may wear this piece more often.
