There are 90 stitches cast onto size #5 needles. Then I used 1 x 1 rib (k1 p1, repeat) for the length of the hat. I decreased in 6 sections at the top.
Back story--and reason for all the photos documenting at least part of the process…
Frogged #1: First I tried the Lollipop pattern because I wanted a swirl of colors, but the repeat on this yarn was too short. Rather than swaths of color I had single rows with clumps where I did the wrap and turn portions. I still think it would be great with a longer color repeat.
Frogged #2: I made about 3” of ribbing and then went up to size 7 needles for the Graham pattern. The ribbed band was really nice, but the texture used in the body of the had read a bit messy and the colors were canceling each other out. I ripped it out but saved some ribbing for try #3.
Frogged#3: Starting with the ribbing I’d saved, I made at least 3/4 of a beret from the brim up. I got single rows of color on the beret until I got to about the last 3” in the middle and then I got huge pools of single colors. They didn’t go together too well.
Frogged #4: I liked the way the ribbing was making thin rows of pretty color bands with a small amount (2-3 rows deep) of pooling. I went back to just using that, only I picked up the stitches with a smaller set of circular needles while working on another hat with the size #5s. Promptly forgot the different needles so was knitting happily away when I noticed, at least an hour or maybe two into it, that the swashes of color were getting bigger and bigger. It looked ok, but I liked the narrow bands best so I ripped it back to the original brim and then continued on with the size 5 needles.
