Messed with the brim a bit-ended up casting 30 stitches of crochet cast on, ending with 15 stitches each on two needles. I increased 1 stitch beg and end of each needle every row until I had 35 stitches, then:

k1, m1k, k2, w&t
p to last stitch, m1p, p1
on next needle, p1, m1p, p2, w&t
k to last stitch, m1k, k1

k1, m1k, k9 (picking up wrapped stitch), w&t
p to last stitch, m1p, p1
p1, m1p, p9(picking up wrapped stitch), w&t
k to last stitch, m1k, k1

k1, m1k, k16 (picking up wrapped stitch), w&t
p to last stitch, m1p, p1
p1, m1p, p16 (picking up wrapped stitch), w&t
k to last stitch, m1k, k1

Repeat on this side.

K1, m1k, knit to last stitch (picking up wrapped stitches) m1k, k1 (49 stitches on each needle.

To attach to hat band, p 26 instead of 28, attach brim as directed, p to end of round
