A photo was posted to Fairisle Knitting and other colorwork knitting group on Facebook, by Laureen Reid, of a gorgeous sweater and I just had to try to reproduce it. Charting it wasn’t hard compared to trying to get the right yarn colors.
The original was knit with J&S, but Palette is about 1/3 the cost. I figured, why not try it? I’ve never knit a whole sweater from Palette and how will I know if I like it if I don’t try? It won’t be the same sweater of course, “… but still good” to paraphrase Stitch.
The first swatch I halted halfway through because the change from red to orange was too abrupt and because I thought the green too dark.
The second swatch was better, and it includes two different background colours in the smaller band. I like the lighter one better. The dark red is too brown, and the orange may be to dark too, so I’ve ordered two new colors along with more black. I’ll try one more swatch, and maybe a hat before ordering a sweaters worth.

Third swatch the charm. I’m satisfied enough that I ordered the rest of the skiens.

My hemmed edge flips like crazy. I’m going to have to rip and I think I’ll redo it with ribbing. But now it’s crazy hot for June and I’m not interested in sweaters. oh well, it will be waiting for me when cool weather returns.

I’m planning to pick this up again, but first I must tackle the hem. I had to hunt to find my project notes. They should have been here in the first place, but here they are now.
Developed based off “Knitting in the Old Way”, Plan 4: Shaped-Steek Jersey.
33 sts in 4”
34 rows in 4”
In 2.75mm needles
Actual bust 53” and hips 57”
Well fitting t shirt
58” bust and 64” hips
I don’t want it as loose as the tshirt so Planned measurements is
bust 57” and hips 61”
for 4” of ease.
27” total body length.
11.5” sleeve depth.
15.5” in body to underarm.
Hemmed edges in black. Put in a seam line at sides and under arms to hide decreases. Then I can put in shaping to make it A line: wider at hips than bust.
Cast on is (33 / 4) x 61 = 503 - 10% = 453.
Work half the hem, then increase to 504 then work turning row. Work the other half of the hem. 7 row hem.
Start the chart. 7 repeats front and back (work first two in black for start and end of each side for a 4 at seam).
Work straight for 10 rows. Then decrease 2 sts on each side every 15th row 7 times.
476 sts
Knit straight till it measures 15.5” from fold line.
Put 25 sts on hold at each underarm and cast on steeks. Decrease either side of armhole every row 6 times and every other row 5 times.
382 sts
Continue until work measures approximately 22” from fold line. May want to consider where pattern is at. Put 90 sts from front on hold and add steek. Work 4”, then put 90 sts from back on hold and add steek. Work 1”. Bind off shoulders.
36 st repeat x 14 = 504

This is back on!
I had to rip out the hem because it flipped so bad. Knit down a ribbed hem instead. Tried it on and there’s plenty of ease over the hips. Carry on!

I’ve got about 16” of body. Going to keep going…

Big day! Putting in the armhole steeks.

Sleeve idea: starting at upper sleeve and working down, work small band, then large band to black. Finish the flower motif with black background the work the remainder of the sleeve in black.

Tonight I finished the body except for the bind off. I worked short rows for the shoulders. I’m dying to see what it looks like cut open!

Cut steels tonight! Whoop! The fit is perfect. I had a momentary weak thought “it could be a vest”. But no, I will continue with the sleeves.

Done! Whew!
This was a lot of fun. And it’s a warm sweater. I am worried about the yarn pilling. Several ends had almost felted together. Which bodes well for the steeks at least.
December 31, 2022
I barely wear this and the pilling under the arms and at the sides is a lot. I think this is a lovely yarn for hats, or cowls, but I will never make a sweater out of it again.
By comparison, a sweater knit from Briggs and Little that sees lots of wear only started to pull after 3 or 4 years. A sweater knit from Jamieson and Smith has never pilled after 9 years of wear.
You get what you pay for.
