Notes

A common way to make a poncho is to knit or weave a rectangle and then join the short end to the long edge with a moebius half-twist. I knit one of these, Dramatic Moebius Cape, with a difference: instead of a rectangle I knit a parallelogram. The seam ends up down the center instead of to the side.

Now that I have a loom I am trying to weave a parallelogram to turn into a moebius poncho. The warp has 134 ends but I am just weaving 4 ends on the left for the first pick. Even picks just go back to the left edge. Odd picks go two warp threads father than the previous pick. After 132 picks I am weaving the full width. I continue this for 70 inches. Then I start narrowing back down to 4 ends, this time on the right edge. The first few narrow picks were a bit fiddly, but then it settled down and was pretty easy.

To keep the diagonal edges tidy I did a hem stitch. But I had to do the hem stitch in sections because only about 4 inches of diagonal edge exist between the breast beam and the fell at any given time. On the trailing edge, I had to use a separate yarn for the hem stitch because I had to start the hem stitch well before I was finished weaving.

Warp length is 117 inches (3.2 yards)

Length to weave each article is:
90 inches (under tension)
80 inches (relaxed)

Width in reed is: 22.4 inches
Number of warp ends: 134

Total Warp Required: 428.8 yards (8.9 ozs.)
Total Weft required is 298.7 yards (6.2 ozs)

Jan 3: I didn’t realize that when you wind long color change yarn on a bobbin that the end that you want to start with is buried inside the bobbin. I wove about 25” with the color sections backwards.

Rewinding each bobbin onto a second bobbin reverses the ends and exposes the end with the next color in the sequence for weaving. Now I have to duplicate this error in the last 25” of the piece or it will look weird.

Jan 9: The inverted gradient stripes at the ends look really interesting in the final product. I’m glad I made that mistake. I laced together the two diagonal ends with a half twist between them. All of the 6” fringes are on one side. It looks like a mane. It is very comfortable. I think I got the size right (the knitted one was too long).
