Notes

This is not a pattern….just my notes. The notes should be adequate for you to make your own if you have some crochet experience.
Will add the finer details when I recall what I did!! :)

US Terms;

Head
Using 2 strands of orange 8ply and 5.5mm hook;
8sc in a magic ring,
Rnd 1: 2sc in ea st around. (16)
Rnd 2: (1sc, 2sc in next st) around. (24)
Rnd 3: (1sc in first 2 sts, 2sc in next) around. (32)
Rnd 4: (1sc in first 3 sts, 2sc in next) around. (40)
Rnd 5: (1sc in first 4sts, 2sc in next) around. (48)
Rnds 6-13: sc around. (48)
Rnd 14: (1sc in first 4sts, 2sc tog) around. (40)
Rnd 15: (1sc in first 3 sts, 2sc tog) around. (32)
Rnd 16: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc tog) around. (24)
Firmly stuff the head.
Rnd 17: (1sc in first st, 2sc tog) around. (16)
Rnd 18: 2sc tog around, stuff a little more if you need to then finish off.

Muzzle;
Using 1 strand of yellow and 3.5mm hook;
4sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: (1sc in first st, 2sc in the next st) around. (6)
Rnd 2: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc in next st) around. (8)
Rnds 3-5: s around. (8)
Rnd 6: (1sc in first 2 sts, 2sc tog) around. (6)
Lightly stuff at this point.
Rnd 7: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc in next st) around. (8)
Rnds 8-10: sc around. (8)
Rnd 11: (1sc in first 2 sts, 2sc tog) around. (6)
Lightly stuff to match the first half of the muzzle.
Rnd 12: (1sc in first st, 2sc tog) around, finish off and weave tail through to close the end hole.
Flatten the shape - I took a small scrap of the yellow yarn and pulled in the middle section of the piece until it looked like a peanut shape. Stitch to the face.

Nose
Using a dusty pink and 3.5mm hook;
Work 2ch in a magic ring, then work 3hdc and finish off. Pull up the ring to form the top point of a triangle shape (this will be the bottom point of your nose) and sew flat to face above muzzle - do not stuff.

Mouth
Using 1 strand of black and 3.5mm hook;
4hdc in a magic ring, do not join circle - change to orange, ch 1, turn, sc to end - finish off and sew to face below muzzle.

Eyes (make 2);
Using black and 3.5mm hook;
Form a magic ring - ch2, then work 6hdc into the ring.
Pull up the ring to close but do not join the end to the starting sc to form a circle…..if you pull up the centre without joining the circle, you will end up with a semi-circular shape. Place one small white stitch somewhere on the eye (same place on both eyes) before stitching to the head.

Eye Patch;
Note: His eye patch flips up and down - Kwazi does that!
Using black yarn and 3.5mm hook,
Band;
Chain 56, work 1hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc to end, finish off. Sew ends of the strip together to form a head band - sew to head. (see pic for placement).
Patch;
Form a magic ring, ch2 then work 7hdc into the ring - do not sl st to join, ch2 and turn. (7)
Row 1: 2hdc in each st to end, ch3, turn. (14)
Row 2: 1dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, (2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next) x 2, 2hdc in next st, (1dc, 2dc in next st) x 2, finish off,

Ears;
Note: Kwazi’s right ear has a piece out of it…it is not a pattern error!
Right Outer Ear;
Using 2 strands of orange held together and 5.5mm hook;
Row 1: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, then 1sc in ea st to end, ch 1, turn. (7)
Row 2: sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 3: sc2tog, 1sc in ea of next 3sts, ch 2 turn.
Row 4: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in ea st to end, ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 5: sc2tog, 1sc in ea of next 3sts, ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 6: sc2tog, 1sc in next 2sts, ch 1, turn. (3)
Row 7: sc2tog, 1sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (2)
Row 8: sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (1)
Row 9: 1sc, finish off.
The chunk out of Kwazii’s ear sits to the outside of his head. I joined a single thread of yarn just above the hole in his ear and worked a row of reverse sc from there, up over the point of his ear and down the other side using a 3mm hook - it gives the edge of the ear a cleaner edge and a more finished look.

Left Outer Ear;
Row 1: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, then 1sc in ea st to end, ch 1, turn. (7)
Row 2: sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 3: sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1 turn. (5)
Row 4: 1sc in ea st across, ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 5: sc2tog, sc to end . (4)
Row 6: sc2tog, sc to end. (3)
Row 7: sc2tog, 1sc, ch 1, turn. (2)
Row 8: sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (1)
Row 9: 1sc, finish off.
Work a row of rev sc around outer ear edge if desired (not the starting row - just up one side, then down the other).

Inner Ears (Make 2);
Using single strand of yellow and 3.5mm hook;
Row 1: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, then 1sc in ea st to end, ch 1, turn. (7)
Row 2: sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 3: sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1 turn. (5)
Row 4: 1sc in ea st across, ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 5: sc2tog, sc to end . (4)
Row 6: sc2tog, sc to end. (3)
Row 7: sc2tog, 1sc, ch 1, turn. (2)
Row 8: sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (1)
Row 9: 1sc, finish off.

Sew an inner ear into each outer ear - making sure that you sew it to the correct side of the right ear, then sew to head.

Body
Using 2 strands of orange and 5.5mm hook;
6 sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 2: (sc 1, 2 sc in next st) round. (18)
Rnd 3: (sc 2, 2 sc in next st) around. (24)
Rnd 4: (sc 3, 2 sc in next st) around. (30)
Rnds 5-7: sc around. (30)
Rnd 8: (1sc in first 3sts, 2sc tog) around. (24)
Rnd 9: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc tog) around. (18)
Rnd 10-12: sc around, finish off.

Stuff body and sew to head.

Yellow belly;
Using single strand of yellow and 3.5mm hook;
Row 1: Ch 10, 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1sc in each of next 6ch, 5hdc in last ch. Now turn your work so that you are working back up along the base of your beginning chains and work 1hdc in each of next 8sts, ch 2, turn. (20)
You should have a piece that resembles a thin tongue.
Row 2: 1 hdc in each of next 8sts, 2dc in each of next 5sts, 1hdc in ea st to end, ch2, turn. (25)
Row 3: 1hdc in ea of next 5sts, 1dc in next 2sts, (2dc, 1dc) x 5, 1dc in each of next 3sts, 1hdc in ea st to end, finish off leaving a tail to sew piece to front of body.

Blue Collar
Using single strand of blue and 3.5mm hook;
I worked a row of foundation single crochet (fdsc) - make it long enough to sit around the neck. When it’s long enough, work 3ch and turn. Then work 4dc, 3hdc, then sc to the last 7 sts, work 3hdc then 4dc. Ch1, turn and work 1sc in ea st to end. Finish off and sew around neck above the arms - so make sure that you’ve sewn them on first.
Work 3 ‘v’ stitches with black embroidery thread of each side of the collar as seen in pics of ‘Kwazii’.

Hands/Arms
Arms (make 2).
Using single strand of orange and 3.5mm hook;
5sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each sc around. (10)
Rnd 2: 1 sc in each sc around. (10)
Rnd 3: 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 1 puff stitch in the next sc (forming the thumb - this puff stitch is made by; inserting your hook into stitch and drawing up a loop, yarn over, then repeat a further 3 times in the same stitch, then pull the final yarn over through all loops on the hook - finish off with 1ch to secure your ‘puff’), 1 sc in each of last 5 sc. (11)
Rnd 4: 1 sc in each st around. (11)
Rnd 5: Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. (9)
Rnd 6: Sc2tog, 1 sc in each st around. (8)
Rnd 7-16: Sc in each st around, finish off.

Once his arms are attached you can now sew on his collar.

Boot/Legs
(Make 2)
Boot;
Using medium blue and 3.5mm hook;
Ch 5.
Rnd 1: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each of next 2ch, 3sc in last ch. Now turn your work so that you are working back up along the base of your beginning chains, 1 sc in each of next 2ch, 2sc in last ch. Join with sl st to first sc. (10)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2sc in first sc, 1sc in each of next 2sc, 2 sc in each of next 3sc, 1sc in each of next 2sc, 2sc in each of last 2sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (16)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2sc in first sc, 1sc in each of next 4 sc, 2sc in each of next 4sc, 1sc in each of next 4sc, 2sc in each of next 3sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (24)
OPTIONAL - If you wish to put soles into your boots - trace the shape of your crochet piece onto some firm plastic (I used an ice-cream container) and cut two soles - slightly smaller than your piece of crochet and set aside. I think that a sole gives a better finished look and shape to the boot.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, Working in back loops only, 1sc in
each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. (24)
Rd 5: Ch 1, 1sc in each of next 7 sc, sc2tog x 3, 1sc in each sc to end of rnd. Join with sl st to first sc. (21)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, 1sc in each of next 6 sc, sc2tog x 3, 1sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog. Join with sl st to first sc. (17)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, 1sc in each of next 5 sc, sc2tog x 3, 1sc in each sc to end of rnd. Join with sl st to first sc. (14)
Rnds 8-9: Ch 1, 1sc in each st around. Join with sl st to first sc. (14)
Insert soles if you wish before continuing.
Change to orange. (Colour change will be covered by the boot cuff, so don’t worry about neatness here).
Rnd 10: Ch1, 1sc in ea st around - do not join your row here…..continue on from here in Amigurumi style (continuous rounds of 1sc in ea st) and work 4 more rounds of sc, finish off and stuff.
Boot cuff;
Using medium blue and 3.5mm hook;
Fdsc 17, finish off and sew around leg where boot and leg join - position the boot cuff so that your starting chain is to the top of the boot. (It is far easier to sew the boot cuffs to the legs before you sew the legs to the body!)
Sew legs to the body.

Tail
Using a single strand of orange and 3.5mm hook;
Make 3sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2sc in first st, 1sc, 2sc in last st. (5)
Rnds 2-25: sc around (5) I work without a stitch marker and in a continuous round until the tail measures approx. 17cm - if you can’t be bothered to count your rounds!
Finish off and sew to body - no need to stuff.

Hat
Using 2 strands of med blue and 5.5mm hook;

Work 5sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2sc in each st around. (10)
Rnd 2: (2sc in first sc, 1sc in ea of next 2sc) around. (15)
Rnd 3: 1sc in ea st round. (15)
Rnd 4: (2sc in first sc, 1sc in ea of next 4sc) around. (18)
Rnd 5: (2sc in first sc, 1sc in ea of next 5sc) around. (21)
Rnd 6: 1sc in ea st around. (21)
Rnd 7: working in the front loops only (2sc in next sc, 1sc in each of next 2sc) around. (28)
Rnd 8: working in the front loops only (1sc in each of next 4sc, next 2sctog) around. (24)
Rnds 9-10: working in both loops again - 1sc in ea st around.
Finish off.
If you wish, you can work 1 round of reverse single crochet to finish off your brim using a single strand of med blue yarn and 3.5mm hook. Turn up the hat brim. If it’s turning inward too much, stretch it out in with your fingers. Sew hat to head, stuffing as you go.

Stitch a row of royal blue around the hat as per the picture.

Blue circle hat badge;
Using a single strand of royal blue and 3.5mm hook;
Work 6sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2sc in ea st around. (12)
Rnd 2: (2sc in first st, 1sc in next) around. (18)
Sew to front of hat.
Using white yarn, sew a row of chain st around edge of circle, then oversew the chains to form a solid line of stitching.
Use white embroidery thread and 1.5mm hook - work 6sc in a magic ring and then finish off to make the octopus body. Sew the white circle to the hat badge and then stitch 4 legs. I then used some black to sew two tiny eyes - French knots will do.
Using your royal blue, work 1 row of stitching around the hat brim - see pic.
