Notes

I used size 3 needles for the mouse, size 1 for the cookie, and size 0 for the rest of the accessories.

What would I do differently? I would make the overalls a little less baggy in the rear, and I would not use bulky handspun for the contrast color in the tail and ears. I thought about redoing the tail and ears, but since this is for a baby and I’m running out of time, I’m not going to worry about it.

This has been an interesting and challenging project!

OVERALLS:

Leg: CO 24 sts. K 18 rnds. Set aside and make another leg.
Put sts from both legs on needles and join into a big rnd. Add 2 backwards loop sts at front and back of crotch.
Inc 4 sts every other rnd (paired inc. at front and back center) three more times.
Remember to make a hole for the tail. I used a double YO in the center back. Do a double decrease a couple rnds above the hole. There should be 64 sts at this point.

K 5 rnds past tail opening, then begin dec as follows:
K2tog, K 12, SSK repeat 4 times to end of rnd.
K 1 rnd plain.
Repeat last 2 rows twice more.

Next rnd: K 5, BO 6, K18, BO 6, K5.
K back and forth on 10 front sts for 8 rows. BO front sts.

K back and forth on 18 back sts for 6 rows, binding off the first st in each row (12 sts).

K 6 sts, turn work, purl back, binding off first st in purl row. Repeat to reduce to 4 sts. (Keep other 6 sts on a separate needle for now.) K back and forth on 4 sts for 6 more rows. Next row: SSK, K2tog. Switch to i-cord and K until strap reaches front flap of overalls comfortably over mouse’s shoulder. Sew strap to front.

Work the second strap in the same way, but BO first st on the knit side to make the V-shape between the straps.

Knit and sew on pockets and other details. Sew up any holes, esp betw the legs.

BACKPACK:

CO 36 sts. Join in a rnd and K 22 rnds.

Next rnd, work in K2 P2 rib for 20 sts, then K to end of rnd. Repeat for 3 more rnds. On the next rnd, BO all rib sts and K to end.

Work st st on rem sts for 25 rows or until flap is long enough to hang well over top opening of backpack. BO flap sts.

Pick up 4 sts on center front of flap and K back and forth a few rows in seed st to make a closure strap. Stuff backpack and sew flap shut. (This is for a baby; if you want to let an older child put things in the tiny backpack, don’t stuff it or sew it shut, just put velcro between the strap and the front of the bag. The down side is that the backpack looks less cute when empty.)

Pick up and knit 36 sts at bottom of backpack. Purl 1 rnd, placing marker between sts 18 and 19. Dec as follows on next rnd: ssk, K to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, K to 2 sts before end, k2tog. Repeat dec rnd 3 more times. Graft remaining sts together.

Make 2 i-cord straps and attach to back of backpack. To make it look even more like the mouse’s backpack in the book, make 2 more i-cord straps to attach to the lower sides of the backpack and tie them around the mouse’s waist. I decided to skip this part, because it would have been overkill.

COOKIE:

Work i-cord on 5 sts to desired length, then arrange in a spiral (kind of like a rug) and sew together. Use shiny dark brown embroidery thread to make chocolate chips. Attach small pieces of velcro to back of cookie and mouse’s paw.
